About Mackenzie

A Mackenzie Presbiterian University was founded in the city of São Paulo in 1870 by the Reverend of the Presbyterian Church George Whitehill Chamberlain. Originally the Reverend and his wife Mary Annesley created the Mackenzie as an American school, with a focus on teaching the English language. It was not until 1952 that it was recognized as an institution of higher education. Great names in contemporary Brazilian history studied at the Mackenzie, such as the painter Anita Malfatti, the explorer Amyr Klink, the pilot Émmerson Fittipaldi, the journalist Boris Casoy, the basketball player Oscar Schimidt and the businessman Roberto Justus.
