October has arrived and with it one of the dates that mark the month so much: the Halloween! Also known as “Halloween” in North American culture, the period is marked by a time when people dress up with a “horror” theme, such as ghosts, werewolves and witches, to get into the holiday spirit.

And for those who still don't know how to spend Halloween, here's a list of 15 horror movies for you to enjoy!

Suspiria (1977 and 2018)

Dario Argento was an influential filmmaker who directed and wrote many horror films in the 1970s and 1980s. One of them is the classic Suspiria, from 1977, which recounts the sinister discoveries of a German dance student who has just arrived at a supernatural school. Taken by "nightmares in real life", she discovers that the fight for survival will be her biggest challenge.

Ideal film for those who enjoy colorful visuals, a pioneer in the horror genre at that time, and also for moviegoers who appreciate the construction of a spectacular atmosphere - which seems 100% extracted from the creator's subconscious.

Just as 2018 remake, you can watch Suspiria on Amazon Prime Video.

The Invisible Man (2020)

The film brings the story of a toxic relationship, in which Cecilia (Elisabeth Moss) suffers daily. One day, the protagonist receives the information that her husband has committed suicide, but, after the trauma suffered, the girl finds it difficult to believe it. Some time later, things start to happen, including making Cecilia believe that her husband, in addition to being alive, is also invisible and stalking her.

Chain of Evil (2014)

Can you imagine if an STI was actually a curse? For this is exactly the concept of Evil Current (It Follows), where a greater “force” pursues you, embodied in a random person, who wants to kill you. The only way to solve the problem is to have sex with someone else and pass it on.

The fun of the film is to watch it with friends (or family, as long as the degree of kinship is distant, so as not to get a strange atmosphere!) and discuss ways to circumvent this pre-established rule of the “current”. Long-term fun compensates for the tension felt during Evil Current, a horror with a very creative formula.

Midsommar: Evil Does Not Wait (2019)

A group of teenagers decide to take a vacation in a field far away from where they live. And what should be a moment of relaxation and fun, turns out to be the biggest nightmare they have ever lived. The story revolves around an event in Sweden in a rather cartoonish location, until the teenagers involved realize they are in the middle of a pagan ritual.

It is also worth mentioning the construction of the main character, Dani, played by actress Florence Pugh, who faces a heavy trauma and the indifference of her boyfriend about what happened.

1922 (2017)

As it could not be missing from our list, this is the first of three films mentioned here that are based on a book by Stephen King. The title 1922 denounces the year in which the film takes place, but it is worth a brief context: in the film, we see a family of farmers in the US state of Nebraska, in conflict with the decision to sell their land and move from there. As a surprise, the father decides to create a background and, for that, he will need the help of his son.

For anyone who is easily won over by brutality, overt violence and complete state of suffering, the film is essential. As it is one of the lesser known works of the Master of Evil (as well as being very recent too, from 2010), there is little chance of you knowing the story, so surprises and scares are guaranteed.

Let Her In (2009)

The film takes place in Stockholm, where the boy Oskar (Kare Hedebrant) is always very alone, in a place that snows a lot. At one point, the boy meets Eli (Lina Leandersson), a pale girl who apparently doesn't fear the cold so much. Eli had recently moved in with a man who apparently seems to be her father and, parallel to all this, murders began to happen. How do Oskar and Eli relate to these events?

Hereditary (2018)

Conquering by shock value, Hereditary brings impeccable performances from the main trio – especially from Toni Collette – taken by the grief that haunts the family. The 2018 premiere divided the audience, but common sense agrees that one of the most spectacular parts of the film is precisely the setting. Not by chance, the film is by director Ari Aster, also responsible for Midsummer.

Those who missed out in theaters need to watch to understand and decide which side of the world they will be on. It is worth knowing that there are limited doses of gratuitous violence and few jumpscares, so psychological terror makes the front line (without moderation).

The Shining (1980)

Classic that needs no introduction, The illuminated was released 40 years ago and is now popularly regarded as one of the best in the horror genre. What many don't remember (or don't know) is that, right at the premiere, the director Stanley Kubrick was rated one of the worst for his work on the film, as well as the performance of Shelley Duvall. Fortunately, the critics rethought the evaluations and The illuminated has been worshiped ever since.

Hellraiser (1987)

With the iconic image of Pinhead, we reaffirm the foundation created by Hellraiser for a feature that mixes fantasy and supernatural mysteries, marking the terror of the 80s. Written and directed by Clive Barker, a strong name among the masters of the genre and writer of the book that inspired the title, in the film we see a kind of magic cube that serves as a tool to evoke a sadomasochistic group from another dimension.

Even if the big villain only earns his name in the sequels, his first appearance with the dark team (which even contains a bizarre creature in sunglasses) is the force that carries the work. A relatively obscure classic that must be checked out this Halloween!

Hush: Death Hears (2016)

There's nothing more terrifying than being in a cabin in the middle of nowhere. More than that, it's a lurking killer, bent on getting in. But how to beat him? After all, our protagonist, the sweet writer Maddie Toung, can't scream or hear, but that doesn't make her any less able to fight for her survival.

In a veritable labyrinth of senses, we watch in desolation Maddie's desperate attempts to ask for help, fight and survive against a cunning killer, stronger and, at the same time, cruel. There is no time to breathe or even to reason in this truncated narrative, without relief. When it's all over, there's a real emptying out as we face the end credits. There is not much to say, after all, what is so special about this work is exactly the experience.
