We finally have a launch for the entry-level segment with the RX 6500 XT, which promises to be the cheapest today

Announced during AMD's CES 2022 press conference a few days ago, the RX 6500 XT was officially launched today, Wednesday (19), to populate the entry-level segment of the GPU market. The launch symbolizes the manufacturer's investment in more basic boards after a few years without news in the category.

The new AMD card arrives to complete the lineup started in 2020 for desktops. According to the company, the RX 6500 XT is the GPU to play in Full HD “making next-gen 1080p gaming accessible to more gamers“. Unfortunately, we still don't know to what extent this is true, as the model's technical specifications left me with one foot behind.

The graphics chip has a 6 nanometer lithography manufacturing process, the NAVI 24, based on microarchitecture RDNA2. It is indeed very interesting to see the arrival of second-gen RDNA on an entry-level card like this, however, in an attempt to balance the price of the card, AMD apparently scaled down many technologies.

The model has 4 GB of GDDR6 VRAM memory and may disappoint some for the small amount. This may be a limiting factor for some scenarios, but we cannot say for sure. However, the 64-bit bus only causes the bandwidth to be stuck at a rate of 144 GB/s in bandwidth. You base clocks and boost reach 2610 Mhz and 2815 Mhz, respectively.

Other specifications indicate a total of 1204 stream processors e 16 computing units. In total, there are 11.5 teraflops of firepower on the RX 6500 XT. Other settings worth noting is the lack of full compatibility with codecs such as AV1, or partial compatibility with h.264. In other words, it appears to be a tricky board for content producers.

Made for Full HD

On AMD's official website, the brand reiterates that the card is capable of running titles such as Resident Evil Village at 108 frames, Halo Infinite at 78 frames, Fortnite at 104 fps, Call of Duty: Vanguard at 61 frames, etc. All this in high settings and Full HD resolution.

In addition, something that can give greater longevity to the GPU is the FidelityFX Super Resolution. AMD's recent technology uses a Upscaling by taking a higher resolution image like 1080p, then downsizing it, then upscaling it again with AI and adding some filters. The big trick is the use of filters and specific software that will be applied to treat and correct imperfections in the final image.

This whole process will reverberate in higher frame rates for your game, but pay attention, as not every title has this option available. Below you can check a more complete explanation by the official AMD Brazil channel.

Price and availability

As this article goes live, the RX 6500 XT is available for pre-order on Kabum website for R$ 2.299 on AsRock, Sapphiree and ASUS models. In the coming days it is expected that more retailers and new brand options will reach the Brazilian market.
