Problems in the supply chain lead to a 20% reduction in the iPhone 13 line and 50% less iPads manufactured, in the total planned for this year

One of the biggest companies in the field of technology, the Apple had to make a temporary interruption in the production of its devices. Occurred in October of this year, iPhone production had a pause for several reasons, the main one being the lack of chips that plagues the world market, as one of the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic.

For the first time in ten years, Apple had to take a break from producing iPhone e iPad, at the beginning of October. The period is marked as essential for the world market in favor of the commemorative dates to come, such as the Black Friday, Christmas e Ano Novo — respectively. During this period, it is common for more employees to work longer to deliver more iPhones e iPads, precisely because of these dates that will come, including receiving extra remuneration for it.

Not only in October: in November of this year, Apple had to pause, again, the production of iPads so that it would not affect the production of iPhones. The company's intention was to manufacture at least 95 million of units of iPhone 13 variants only in 2021, however, this number reached 85 million, according to forecasts for this month of December.

What caused this break?

In fact, a number of factors lead to this negative result for the company, but the main one is the lack of chips that has been affecting the entire technological niche in recent times. The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated both the manufacturing process of devices and smartphones, videogames, smart TVs, among others, and this ended up generating a large consumption of these components, affecting, even, the production of iPhone.

Another reason is some restrictions on the use of energy in the China, where iPhones are made, allegedly for the preservation of the environment. A factor that also significantly affects is the price of coal on site, which can fluctuate daily.

All these restrictions affected several Apple factories, reaching more than 150 factories. In addition to these regional problems in China, lockdowns in Vietnam and Malasia contributed even more in reducing — and even pausing — iPhone production.
