Battleblock Theater, the newest game from The Behemoth (the same developer of the excellent Castle Crashers), is an absolute success of critics and sales. Released first on Xbox 360, it recently arrived on PCs (including Linux versions) via Steam.

Supported by Steam Workshop, you can create your own custom levels, make them freely available to the community and also download and play levels created by other users, considerably extending the life of the game.

But what a lot of people don't know is that there's still one more way to make the game look your way (literally): it is possible to create custom heads for the characters. That's right! You can turn absolutely anything into a playable Battleblock Theater character!

The procedure is simple, requiring only basic knowledge of image editing. Prepared?

  • Create a file . Png with transparent background 128 × 128 pixels;
  • In your favorite image editor, cut out the image you want to use as a head. It is recommended that the head is slightly “profile” to the right;
  • On the transparent .png image, paste the cutout in the center. Leave a few pixels left over at the edges – the game automatically stretches the heads, and leaving the record too close to the edges results in a disproportionate head;
  • If the head record has transparency, paint it white, otherwise the head will “float”;
  • In your image editor, give a black outline of 1 to 3 pixels in the cut of the head, in order to keep it faithful to the rest of the body.

I used as an example a drawing that a friend made for me and the result was this:

  • Hello the image and move it to the game folder;
    No Windows, the path is …/Steam/SteamApps/Common/Battleblock Theater/GameData/UserFaces
    Now at Linux, the path is: …/home/.steam/steam/SteamApps/Common/Battleblock Theater/GameData/UserFaces.
  • Enter the game and, when selecting the type of head, choose the blueprint and then the desired head. Voila! You have your fully functional custom character.

Before enjoying the game with the new characters, one more detail: to view the personalized heads of friends in online matches, it is necessary to enable a special option. In the game pause menu, go to Help and Options / Settings. Then just select connected in the option “Remote user faces".

Up to 60 custom heads can be maintained at a time!

If you're tired of the game's default heads and don't want to go through the trouble of editing your own, you can download several ready-made heads created by Reditt users clicking here.
