A Embraer, a Brazilian manufacturer of commercial, executive, agricultural and military aircraft, aerospace parts, services and support in the area, hopes that the use of its Flying cars should handle at least 12,7 million passengers per year, until 2035. The first cities to receive the “Vertiportos”, names given to the landing and take-off tracks of these vehicles, will be Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Understand:
Flying cars coming soon to Brazil!
It is an investment made by EVE, a subsidiary of Embraer responsible for the development of eVTOL. The acronym refers to the English term for “Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing vehicle”, or “electric vertical take-off landing vehicle”, in free translation), is scheduled to enter into commercial operation in the city of São Paulo in three years, starting in 2026.
This Thursday (9), EVE disclosed the data together with a collaboration between the company and DHL Supply Chain, specialized in logistics, aiming to structure the supply chain of aircraft components. The production of the aircraft will take place in the city of Taubaté, located in the state of São Paulo. The estimates cover both the amount of eVTOLs how much of vertiports, which are the designated departure and arrival points specifically for the eVTOLs. The management of the operations of these aircraft and facilities will be carried out through commercial partners.
EVE announced that it had received letters of intent for a total of 2.850 eVTOLs, estimating an approximate cost of $3M monthly (R$ 15 million) per vehicle. The company also disclosed that it is currently in the process of assembling the prototype in full scale, with forecast for the first test flight takes place in 2024. Embraer branch leaders argue that the feasibility of implementing a flying car requires a review of current regulations, which currently focus mainly on helicopters.
Both EVE and the air taxi company Helisul will have the opportunity to propose changes in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Both were chosen to participate in the program Sandbox.Rio, allowing companies to experimentally launch services with a streamlined process.
If you take helicopter rules today, they don't adapt 100% for eVTOL. The Sandbox is an excellent opportunity for us to show that eVTOL will be safe, but that rules and regulations have to be modified.
Says Luiz Mauad, vice president of services at EVE
Despite the popularization of the term “flying car”, it is important to clarify that the eVTOLs will not follow the model of private cars available for purchase by any individual. Instead, these aircraft will be integrated into a system similar to racing apps like Uber e 99. André Stein, chief strategy officer at EVE, tries to clarify that these are operations organized between established vertiports, with operators who have certification, and are not intended — so far — for personal use.
Check out some informative data on the availability of the technology, with the number of vehicles, vertiports, passengers, routes and estimated revenue, presented by EVE:
