What changes in ChatGPT Finances?

Announced by OpenAIThe Finance feature attempts to transform ChatGPT into a more contextual financial assistant. Instead of responding only with generic tips, the system can consider real data from connected accounts, goals stated by the user, and information saved in financial memories to explain spending patterns and suggest next steps.

The integration comes at a time when OpenAI is expanding ChatGPT into sensitive areas of the user's life, such as health, productivity, and now money. The company says that more than 200 million people use ChatGPT monthly for questions about budgeting, investments, goals, and planning, and that the advancements in reasoning from GPT-5.5 They make the model more suitable for complex financial questions.

How does ChatGPT access the bank account?

Access is gained from within ChatGPT itself, through the area finances or through commands like “@Finances, connect my accounts”. Authentication goes through PlaidOpenAI is a platform used to connect financial apps to banks and brokerages. According to OpenAI, the initial launch will support more than 12 financial institutions, including banks, card companies, investment accounts, and credit services in the US.

After authorization, ChatGPT synchronizes and categorizes the data. The user then sees a dashboard with information such as portfolio performance, expenses, active subscriptions, and upcoming payments. The company also states that Intuit support should be added in the future, paving the way for more integrated actions, such as tax estimates or card recommendations within the ChatGPT ecosystem.

What kind of financial advice can AI give?

With accounts connected, ChatGPT can answer questions based on the user's real financial context. OpenAI cites examples such as creating a plan to buy a house, reviewing subscriptions, analyzing investment risks, understanding travel expenses, comparing scenarios, and finding categories where it's possible to save money without manually creating a spreadsheet.

In practice, the difference lies in the granularity. Without a banking connection, the chatbot tends to give broad recommendations, such as cutting variable expenses or automating savings. With the data connected, it can point out that restaurants, online shopping, or transportation were the biggest drivers of savings in a specific period, suggesting limits by category and more realistic monthly goals.

However, OpenAI itself emphasizes that ChatGPT does not replace a professional financial advisor. This recommendation is especially important for high-impact decisions, such as investments, debt, home purchases, tax planning, or retirement, where local regulations, risk profiles, and legal consequences need to be assessed by experts.

What data is made available to OpenAI?

According to OpenAI, by connecting the accounts, ChatGPT can access balances, transactions, investments and liabilities, such as debts and loans. The company states, however, that the chatbot does not see complete account numbers e You are unable to move money, pay bills, make transfers, or change financial products..

Users can disconnect accounts at any time in Settings > Apps > Finances or via the feature's own page. After disconnection, synchronized data should be deleted from OpenAI's systems within 30 days. This does not automatically remove old conversations from the history, but they can be deleted manually.

Another sensitive point is the use of data for training. OpenAI says that conversations with connected financial accounts follow the general training configuration chosen by the user in the ChatGPT data controls. It will also be possible to delete specific financial memories and use temporary chats, in which ChatGPT does not access the connected accounts.

Privacy and security will be the main test.

The new feature increases the usefulness of ChatGPT, but also raises the perceived risk. Financial data reveals income, routine, consumption habits, debts, investments, approximate location, and even family relationships. Therefore, the feature should be evaluated not only by the quality of the responses, but also by the clarity of the controls, the security of the account, and the user's trust in OpenAI and its integration partners.

To reduce risks, OpenAI recommends enabling multi-factor authentication (MFA) in ChatGPT. It's also worth reviewing granted permissions, disconnecting unnecessary accounts, avoiding exposing irrelevant information in conversations, and keeping the use of training data disabled if the user doesn't want financial interactions to be used to improve models.

The debate is reminiscent of the adoption of Plugins and integrations in ChatGPTBut with a much more sensitive layer: instead of connecting generic services, the user is providing real financial context to an AI. The promise is to receive more useful answers; the challenge is to ensure that convenience doesn't come at the cost of privacy, security, or decisions made with excessive reliance on the machine.

When will it arrive in Brazil?

For now, the ChatGPT Finance preview is limited to Pro plan users in the United States, on web and iOS. OpenAI states that it intends to learn from initial usage before bringing the feature to the Plus plan and, subsequently, to more people. There is no official release date for Brazil.

If it arrives in the country, the experience will have to consider the local ecosystem of banks, Open Finance, Pix, cards, brokers, and data protection rules. Until then, Brazilian users can continue using ChatGPT for general budgeting and financial organization questions, but without directly connecting bank accounts to the Finance feature.
