After 20 Years, Final Fantasy Main Series and Other Classics Return to Nintendo

More than two decades ago, in November 1994, the role-playing game 'Final Fantasy III' hit stores across the United States. At that time, everything Nintendo played, turned gold, and the game, a partnership between the Japanese company and Squaresoft, helped catapult the developer's success in the West, which came to dominate the industry alongside Sega.

What the public understood as the third episode of the game on the western console, was actually the sixth episode of the series in Japan, and until that moment, it was the last game of the series to come out to a company console.

old rivalry

In the following years, the relationship between the two companies soured, and the final blow came when Squaresoft chose to move forward, joining forces with Sony. From the partnership, the seventh edition of the game was born, released in 1997. The release is so iconic to this day, that it is known not only as one of the company's main successes, but also a triumph of the games industry.

It is no exaggeration to say that the Final Fantasy VII is a milestone in the history of RPG and the industry in general. Seen until today as one of the main responsible for the success of the Playstation console, the game also marked the failure of the rival 64, definitively consolidating Sony in the console market.

Final Fantasy returns

The rivalry, however, seems to be in the past. The Japanese manufacturer took advantage of the Nintendo Direct, released on Thursday, September 13, to announce the return of the main saga to its consoles. That's right, the game will now finally be available for the developer's consoles as well.

Although some content from the series was already available for consoles, such as remakes and spin-offs, when the partnership with Square-Enix was resumed (a merger of the former Squaresoft with the also Japanese Enix), the most recent episode of the saga available was still the one released there in 1994.

In addition to it, three other games that are part of the main saga will be released: the "IX”, "X/X-2 HD Remaster” e "XII: The Zodiac Age". Square-Enix promises to release it in 2019, but has not specified dates, much less values.

In addition to Nintendo, it's also time for Xbox

Classic RPG will also be available for Xbox

In addition to the aforementioned games, four other games in the franchise are also on their way to being included in the Switch catalog. the version “XV Pocket Edition”, which had already been announced, arrives on the console in the next few days. “World of Final Fantasy Maxima” will be released on the 6th of November, and “Chocobo's Mystery Dungeon Every Buddy” out by the end of this year. In 2019, it will be the turn of the version “Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition”, remastering of the game that marked the return of the franchise to Nintendo, when it was released in 2003 for the GameCube.

Virtually all games will also be coming to Xbox, except “Crystal Chronicles” and “Chocobo's Mystery Dungeon”. Despite the franchise classics debuting on Microsoft's console, the series was already present on Xbox, with the "XIII" trilogy, and on Xbox One, with the "XV" version.

All games are available for PC and Playstation. Which platform do you prefer? Leave a comment.
