OpenAI updates Codex using computer, images, and memory.

Codex gains OpenAI capabilities to use the computer, interpret images, maintain memory, and extend automations with plugins.

A OpenAI announced a major update for the app of Codex No. MacOS and Windows, adding features such as computer use, in-app navigation, image generation, memory management, and new plugins. The company states that the new feature makes the Codex A more comprehensive partner for the more than 3 million developers who use the tool weekly to accelerate software development stages.

With the update, the Codex It now operates the computer alongside the user, works with more tools and applications used daily, generates images, remembers preferences, learns from previous actions, and takes on continuous or repeatable tasks. The app also received deeper support for developer workflows, including PR review, viewing multiple files and terminals, and connecting to remote devboxes via SSH (in alpha).

O Codex It also begins to function in a more integrated way with the web. The application now includes a proprietary browserallowing you to comment directly on pages to guide the agent during frontend, app, and game development tasks.

Using the computer in the background

The new computer usage feature allows the Codex Interact with system applications by viewing, clicking, and typing using your own cursor. MacMultiple agents can operate in parallel without interfering with the user's work in other apps. For developers, this can be helpful in frontend change cycles, application testing, or working with software that doesn't offer an API.

The update includes over 90 additional plugins, bringing together skills, application integrations, and MCP servers to expand the Codex's ability to gather context and perform actions on user tools. Among the new plugins mentioned by... OpenAI are Atlassian Rovo, to help with the management of JIRA, CircleCI, CodeRabbit, GitLab Issues, Microsoft Suite, Neon by Databricks, Remotion, Render and SuperpowersThe app will also now handle review comments in GitHubUsing multiple terminal tabs and connecting to remote devboxes via SSH in alpha.

Furthermore, it's now possible to open files directly from the sidebar, with rich previews for PDFs, spreadsheets, slides, and documents. A new summary panel helps track agent plans, sources, and artifacts. With these changes, the OpenAI states that the Codex It becomes more agile for going through different stages of the software development cycle, such as writing code, verifying results, reviewing changes, and collaborating with the agent within a single workspace.

Memory preview and proactive suggestions

A OpenAI It also began releasing a preview of the memory feature. With it, the Codex It can retain useful context from previous experiences, including personal preferences, corrections, and information that took time to gather. The goal is to enable future tasks to be completed more quickly and with a level of quality that previously depended on longer, personalized instructions.

O Codex It also begins to proactively suggest tasks to help the user pick up where they left off. Using project context, connected plugins, and memory, the agent can suggest how to start the workday or where to resume a previous project. An example cited by OpenAI It is the identification of open comments on Google Docs which require attention, with a search for relevant context in Slack, at Notion and in the codebase.

A OpenAI states that, in just one year since the launch of CodexAs a result, developers are using the tool in various ways. The company says that many start by using it to write code and are increasingly using it in other stages of the development process.
