iOS 16's new lock screen is super customizable – and we're going to show you everything you can configure on it

Apple has completely revamped the iOS 16 lock screen, operating system version for iPhones launched by Apple on Tuesday (13). Now it's more customizable. Much more customizable.

Until the iOS 15, you could just choose the wallpaper on the screen and apply the “perspective effect”, which gave a certain three-dimensionality to the photo. In the new version of the system, you can choose styles, colors and widgets, in addition to creating (and switching between) several screens, and even assigning different purposes to them.

These new tools allow you to make the new iPhone locked screen not only more like you, but more useful as well. It's the showmetech shows you all the tools to do this.

First, you need to know how to access the customization of this new iPhone lock screen. One of them is to choose the category “Background image”, in the application “Settings”. In addition to the lock screen, you can customize the home screen (the one with the application icons, which appears after you unlock the phone.

The other way to access this customization is from the lock screen, but it varies depending on your iPhone model.

If your cell phone is a “button iPhone” (iPhone 8 or SE), the way to access the lock screen gallery – where you can customize your current screen, choose which one to customize (or currently use), and create new ones – is: tap and hold the screen for a little while, touch and hold the screen again and press Touch ID (the one you use to unlock the screen).

Already in "iPhones without button” (from iPhone X onwards), the way to the gallery is simpler: with the phone unlocked, touch the screen and hold for a little while and the gallery appears.

In this gallery, you can also delete lock screens. To do this, tap the version you want to delete, drag it up and tap the red button with a trash can icon.

Okay, now that you know how to get to the screen for creating and customizing lock screens, let's see what you can configure on them.

fabric style

When creating a lock screen, in addition to choosing the wallpaper (or wallpapers), you can browse through different styles and options. See what each one offers below:

  • Photos: you choose a photo from your gallery to use as wallpaper (iOS suggests some);
  • Random photos: automatically selects a handful of photos from your gallery to scroll through the day (you can also manually select photos and determine how often they change);
  • emoji: you can choose up to six emojis and iOS 16 automatically creates a wallpaper in five patterns (small grid, medium grid, large grid, circles and spiral);
  • Time: About 7,5 hrs in total, 4,5 hrs to go up and 3 to come down is a dynamic wallpaper that changes according to the weather wherever you are;
  • Astronomy: is a dynamic wallpaper that can show you five things (all with live astronomical conditions at your current location): overview or closest to Earth; overview or closest to the Moon; and the solar system;
    Collections: “classic” Apple wallpapers;
  • Color: you can choose a background color and apply one of six effects (vibrant, tone, deep, steam, clear and smooth).

time design

After configuring which photo and style you will use on the new iOS 16 lock screen, you can choose the font that will be used at the time. To do this, tap on the time and a panel with options will appear.

In all, there are eight fonts, ranging from minimalism to modern, passing through classic. You can also choose from 14 pre-selected colors or open the gradient (the last ball in the color row) and slide your finger along it until you find a color you like.

Widgets

Apple has opened up yet another space for widgets on iOS: the locked screen. There are five spaces – one above the time and four below – where you can place buttons that bring basic information (updated in real time) of the applications to which they are associated. And by tapping on them, you can open those apps.

For example, the Reminders widget shows your list of…well, reminders. When you complete one, you can tap the widget to open the app and mark the reminder as complete. After doing this, the app widget will show the updated list of reminders, that is, without what you have marked as done.

In the time header there is space for a horizontal widget, where you can squeeze, for example, a reminder or weather information. Below the time, there are four spaces. However, some widgets are wider and therefore take up two spaces. So, you can place one to four widgets in this field. (https://chiringa.com) Or none. It depends on your taste.

For now, most widgets available for the new iOS 16 lock screen are from Apple apps that are already factory installed on iPhones (Calendar, Reminders, Clock, Fitness, Weather, etc). But the company allows third-party app developers to create buttons for this space – in fact, the showmetech already listed 15 Apps That Have Widgets For iPhone Lock Screen.

Additional Options

Each lock screen style offers a range of options to customize your chosen wallpapers.

When you decide to use a photo from your gallery, for example, you can choose between leaving the original version or applying three filters to it: black and white, bichrome and “washed, colored”. To see how each filter changes the photo, slide your finger to the left, as in the stories from Instagram. And by tapping the “…” button, in the lower right corner of the screen, you can choose between 12 colors to apply to the chosen filter (except, of course, in black and white).

This button is also used to activate or deactivate the “depth effect”. This feature, through artificial intelligence, highlights the main object of the photo, putting it in front of the time and widgets, and leaving the background in the background. The tool gives a charm to the wallpapers, but it doesn't work on the iPhone 8.

When you choose random photos, in addition to applying filters to them (you can only choose between applying the same filter to all or none), you can manage which photos will be shown (touching the button in the lower left corner) and with which frequency will be switched (by tapping the bottom right button). Regarding the frequency, you can determine whether it will be daily, hourly, by locking the screen or by touching the locked screen.

In the other styles, you can switch between different astronomical views, emoji patterns and color gradients (as this text has already explained, in the item “fabric style” from this list).

Notifications

Another significant change in iOS 16's new lock screen was the change in the presentation of notifications. And that is also customizable now.

By default, notifications appear stacked, in the chronological order in which they were issued, at the bottom of the screen. But if you touch the region where they are stacked and pull down, they will be replaced by a small counter that will only show the total notifications. And if you scroll up, you'll see the complete and organized list, just like in previous versions of iOS.

To configure what is the default display of notifications on your iPhone, go to the app “Settings”, then “Notifications” and choose from: count (which shows only the total, at the bottom edge), set (stacked at the bottom edge), and list (which shows all and takes up the whole screen).

Focus Mode

In addition to customizing lock screens, you can associate them with iOS 16 focus modes (Image: Pedro Spadoni/Showmetech)

In addition to choosing the style of the locked screen, you can associate it with one of the iOS focus modes. Thus, the screen will be activated along with the mode. That way you can, for example, create a lock screen for when you're working (and associate it with Focus Work mode), another for when you're driving, another for when you're reading, etc.

Also, when you automate focus modes – determining, for example, that one of them works from Monday to Friday, from 9 am to 18 pm; another from 18pm to 22pm and so on – the lock screen change will also happen automatically, following the same settings.

To associate a focus mode with a lock screen, go to the screen gallery and click on the small “Focus”, which is always at the bottom.
