O Cannes 2026The World Film Festival, one of the world's most prestigious film festivals, returned today to its 79th edition and will run until the 23rd. Featuring more than 20 films competing in the main category, the event serves as a showcase for various film distributors, as well as giving a preview of what we can expect in the market. 2027 OscarUnfortunately, for this edition, we will not have a Brazilian film in the running for the Palme d'Or. However, names like Pedro Almodóvar and Ryusuke Hamaguchi They arrive with films highly anticipated by critics and film enthusiasts. Check out the festival information below:
Who is on the jury for this 79th edition?
No festival of Cannes There are four main juries that are divided among the other four categories of the event. For the main competition, the jury composed of the president and eight other guests decides the winner. palm d'or...from the Jury Prize and other awards related to directing and acting. Competing films
For the main competition vying for the Palme d'Or, 22 films were selected and will be screened in the Louis Lumière auditorium throughout the festival. Check out the works chosen for the 2026 edition:
Bitter Christmas
Directed by Pedro Almodóvar;
Synopsis:Elsa, an advertising executive, loses her mother during a long December holiday. To avoid grieving, she immerses herself in work, until she suffers a panic attack that forces her to slow down. Her partner, Bonifacio, becomes her emotional support during this difficult time. Seeking relief, Elsa travels to Lanzarote with her friend Patricia, while Bonifacio remains in Madrid."
A Woman's Life
Directed by: Charline Bourgeois-Tacquet
Synopsis: "Gabrielle, a fifty-year-old surgeon, is questioning love, desire, and aging, all amidst a hospital crisis, until a novelist arrives to watch her work on a book she's writing."
The Black Ball
Directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi
Synopsis: "La bola negra" tells the interconnected stories of three men in three different eras. Three lives intimately linked by sexuality and desire, by pain and heritage, and one of Federico García Lorca's last unfinished works.
Coward
Directed by Lukas Dhont
Synopsis: "A Belgian soldier confronts his fears and finds courage in the trenches of World War I, battling his own demons as a brutal conflict tests the limits of his bravery and humanity."
Parallel Tales
Directed by Asghar Farhadi
Synopsis: "In search of inspiration for her new novel, Sylvie begins to spy on her neighbors across the street."
Paper tiger

Synopsis: "Two brothers pursue the American dream, but soon find themselves embroiled in a brutal world of violence and corruption within the Russian mafia."

All of a Sudden
Directed by Ryusuke Hamaguchi
Synopsis: "The story follows Marie-Louise Fontaine, director of a nursing home on the outskirts of Paris, who defies convention by adopting the 'Humanitude' method against the resistance of her staff. Her encounter with Mari Morisaki, a terminally ill Japanese playwright, transforms her life, and together they fight for humanity against the limits of the system."
The Unknown
Directed by Arthur Harari
Synopsis: "Photographer David Zimmerman rarely leaves home, until friends take him to a wild party. He becomes obsessed with a mysterious woman and follows her. At dawn, his life is transformed: he wakes up in her body."
Another Day

Synopsis: “Garance is a young actress, but not a star. She gets by as best she can, finding strength and comfort in alcohol. As she embarks on an eight-year journey of life-changing experiences, she drinks more and more. Until death seems to draw near.”
Sheep in the Box
