Origin and success
The saga How to Train Your Dragon was born as an adaptation of the series of children's books written by the British Cressida cowell, published from 2003. DreamWorks acquired the rights to the work and released the first film in 2010, directed by Dean deblois e Chris Sanders. The duo was responsible for reformulating the project, which initially had a more childish tone, and transformed it into the animation we know today with its own mythology and an enchanting universe for all ages.
Over the years, How to Train Your Dragon became the DreamWorks' fourth highest-grossing franchise, just behind Shrek, Madagascar e Kung Fu Panda. Together, the three films in the original trilogy grossed over $1,6 billion in theaters. In addition, all films were nominated for Oscar for Best Animation, with the first also competing in the category of Best Original Soundtrack. The franchise has also collected several other awards and critical acclaim over the years. It was so successful that the story gave rise to a expanded universe with series, shorts and specials, which keeps the franchise alive to this day.
