Showmetech was invited to participate in a special workshop focused on getting to know the Ledger Flex, an authentication device (also called a Hard Wallet) with support for several cryptocurrencies that serves as an additional layer of security and has a screen with technology E Ink, the same screen as the Kindle. See all the details.

Lightweight and drop-resistant, the Ledger Flex is an E Ink display that could easily be mistaken for a Kindle. The model has the same body across all its variants, but buyers can choose from five bezel colors, called Magnet Folio: Graphite, Bitcoin Orange, Solana Edition, Oxidate Green e Neptune Blue.

There's only one button to turn the display on and off, and a USB-C port for recharging. Compared to the Ledger Nano Flex, this version is more compact and has only one button, which now only activates the display, as even the cryptocurrency transaction confirmation process is done on the screen.

The device has a touch screen E Ink 2,84" curved screen, which displays text and images in black and gray. An interesting feature is that instead of just seeing the Ledger logo, you can change the Cold Wallet lock screen to use a photo.

When using the smartphone app, simply upload the photo you want to see on your device and within seconds, the image you want will be on your Ledger Flex, as you can see in the photo above.

Features

Transaction review

The main security function of a hardware wallet is protect your private keys. O Ledger Flex elevates this process with its E Ink touchscreen, making transaction review more intuitive and secure.

The process works like this: you create the transaction, such as sending cryptocurrency, on your computer or cell phone using the app Ledger Live, reading a QR code or entering the unique key of the person who will receive the cryptocurrencies.

The data from this transaction is then sent to the Ledger Flex. However, the transaction is not signed immediately. Instead, the screen E Ink The device's display displays all important details clearly and legibly. You can review the amount, recipient address, and network fees directly on your device.

You can check every detail without having to squint or scroll, which is a crucial security feature. If a hacker manages to alter the transaction data on your computer, Ledger Flex will display the correct transaction.

The signature only occurs when you manually approve it on the device's touchscreen by pressing the screen for about three seconds, ensuring that your act of approval is physical and cannot be spoofed by malicious software.

2FA Authentication

Ledger's primary Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) method is through the hardware itself, acting as a physical security key. The process is done via the app. Ledge Security Key, installed directly on the device.

Instead of relying on codes generated by apps on your phone, Ledger uses a more robust security standard, where the device becomes the second authentication factor. To log in to a compatible account, such as your Google account, you need to physically have your Ledger in hand and confirm authentication directly on the device's screen, connecting it via USB-C, Bluetooth, or NFC.

This approach offers a superior layer of security because the authentication “key” never leaves your ledger. This prevents your identity from being stolen by online attacks like Phishing, where criminals try to trick you into entering a 2FA code on a fake website. Because the process requires physical interaction with your device, it becomes virtually immune to this type of threat, protecting your online accounts from unauthorized access much more effectively.

Although Ledger does not generate the six-digit codes from the app Google Authenticator, it offers a more advanced level of security for services that support the FIDO (Universal 2nd Factor) standard, which includes Google. Thus, the device integrates with the Google ecosystem to protect your login even more securely than the app itself, ensuring that your second authentication factor is a tamper-proof hardware key, not just a code that can be intercepted.

NFT Viewer

Ledger Flex allows you to view your NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) directly on your device's E Ink display, a feature that combines hard wallet security with personalization.

The function is simple: after connecting the Ledger Flex to the app Ledger Live, you can browse your NFT collection. When you find one you like, simply select it and send it to your device's screen. The NFT can then be displayed as a wallpaper or on your lock screen.

The main security benefit is that you're viewing a representation of a digital asset that's validated and securely stored within your device. It's a way to prove and display ownership of your digital art without exposing your private keys online. Essentially, Ledger Flex transforms your hard wallet into a secure, personal gallery for your digital collectibles.

O Secure Element Chip It's like an ultra-secure digital vault, designed to store sensitive information, such as your cryptocurrency wallet keys, and perform critical operations, such as signing transactions. Unlike a regular chip, it's built to resist both physical and software attacks.

To give you an idea, it protects itself in several ways. It prevents intruders from guessing your secret information based on the chip's power consumption, similar to how a safe makes random sounds to confuse a thief.

Additionally, it has internal sensors that detect any sudden changes in light, temperature, or voltage, and blocks access to data immediately if anything is detected.

Finally, the Secure Element Chip does not accept the installation of external programs, ensuring that no virus or malicious code can steal your data, acting as a safe that can only be opened with a specific key and cannot be copied.

Security PIN

The security PIN works like a card password, but it's used directly on the Ledger Flex screen. In addition to being used to unlock the screen, the security PIN, which can be 4 to 8 digits long, is also required to authorize transactions. If the PIN is entered incorrectly three times on the screen, the device automatically formatted as an automatic security measure.

Words of security

A Ledger Flex works similarly to other devices on the same market. It uses a secret recovery phrase which serves as the master key to your funds. The main function of this phrase is to allow you to regain access to your assets, even if the device is lost or damaged.

O Ledger Flex stores private keys offline on a chip Secure ElementThe recovery phrase, a sequence of 24 words, is the backup for these keys. Ledger provides three sets of cards where you can write down the passphrases and keep them in a safe place, such as at home or even in a safe. When setting up the device, the user must repeat the passphrases in the same order as seen on the previous screens.

Launched in July of this year, this card comes in the Ledger Flex box. The idea is that if you've lost or damaged your Ledger Flex and don't have the recovery passwords nearby, you can restore the passwords and data saved on your previous device.

The registration of Ledger Recovery Key This is done as soon as the device is updated, simply by tapping the card on the back of the device. Then, simply create a four- to eight-digit code that will be requested during recovery when a new device is being set up.
