The favorite era of movie lovers around the world is back! This Tuesday (24), the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released the complete list of Oscar nominees 2023. The actors Rice Ahmed & Allison Williams were together through a live on the official Oscar channel to reveal this year's nominees, including some surprises.
All in Everywhere at Once tops nominations
One of the biggest surprises of the previous year and a darling of moviegoers, A24's "Everything in Everywhere at the Same Time" became the leader of the awards with 11 nominations, including Best Film, Best Director and Best Actress. But the moviesTo the West Nothing New", from Netflix, and "Inisherin's Banshees“, from Searchlight, follow behind with 9 nominations apiece, including Best Picture.
The 2023 awards are also full of surprises, such as Angela Bassett securing Marvel's first nomination in the "Best Actress" category and Jamie Lee Curtis earning her first Academy Award nomination for her performance in "Everything and Everywhere at the Same Time". Furthermore, it is also interesting to note that no women were nominated for the “Best Director” category, a stark contrast compared to the 2022 edition, as Jane campion took home the prize thanks to the film “Ataque dos Cães”.
Lady Gaga, RRR and Rihanna are part of the surprises
The Academy loves to surprise with some of its choices, and it's clear that the Oscars 2023 would be no different. For the first time in the history of the awards, the song “Naatu Naatu” became the first song from an Indian film (RRR) to be nominated for the “Best Original Music” award.
Still in this category, the singer Rihanna earns his first Oscar nomination for "lift me up", from the film "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever After". In addition, Lady Gaga also entered the dispute with the song “Hold my Hand”, from Top Gun: Maverick, becoming the fourth nomination for the Actress / Singer.
Brazil was left out of the award, even having two pre-nominated films. The documentary "Territory” and the short “Sideral ” were not selected for the Academy's final list. The film "mars one” was left out of contention in the “Best International Film” category, as it failed to make the top 15 semi-finalists. South America will be represented by “Argentina 1985", directed by Santiago Miter.
Some Academy picks are also already causing an uproar on the internet, with some people questioning the nomination. Ana de Armas in the category of “Best Actress” at the Oscar 2023 for the film “Blonde“. The film was one of the biggest disasters of 2022, and is currently holding a 5.5 on the IMDB. In fact, the film was one of the biggest nominees for the infamous Golden Raspberry, an award that celebrates the worst films of the year and should take place a few days before the Oscar 2023 awards.
Netizens were also bothered by how some films were “snubbed” in the main categories of the awards. The Batman was nominated only in the categories of "Makeup", "Special Effects" and "Sound", but was left out of nominations such as "Photography", "Best Film" and "Direction". On that same note, the film “The King Woman", made by Viola Davis, received no indication, and David Cameron was not nominated for “Best Director” for his work with Avatar 2: The Water Path.
