Boy Kills World, or Against the world in its translation in Brazilian cinemas, it is an action film trash arcade style game that you either love or hate. Still, it is undeniable to say that the film does not surprise with its surreal fight choreography that defies the laws of physics, exciting ambient soundtrack and Bill Skarsgård as the protagonist. Check out the review Boy Kills World and production details:
History
We follow the story of Height (Bill Skarsgård), a boy whose family was murdered as a child in a tragic event that also left him deaf and mute. With the help of the mysterious Shaman (Yayan Ruhian), Boy devised the perfect revenge plan against his evildoers, where he himself would be the main weapon.
The protagonist then begins an insane journey looking for answers, venturing through the nuances of a dystopian reality, where nothing seems to make much sense, except the desire to Height to avenge your past.
Review: Boy Kills World

In a clear tribute to the arcade games from the 90s, watch Boy Kills World It's like watching a movie playing inside classic coin-operated machines, and that's totally different from a live action version. In fact, we already had the not-so-pleasant experience of following an adaptation of a game of this genre, but luckily for us, Boy Kills World It doesn't make any point of taking itself seriously like that, which is great.
The film, which also drank from other classics such as Kill Bill (2003) and Fight Club (1999), brings dystopian elements mixed with the contemporary, making it a challenge to locate the space-time of the production. This makes Boy Kills World more interesting, as it is always a surprise to find devices that link to a post-modern era and others that seem to have come out of the Tarzan universe.
It's a delicious mix to watch that doesn't prove unnecessary at any point, it's part of the mythology and was very welcome during the film.
What gains notoriety for the plot is Boy's deafness and muteness. In the first instance, anyone who reads the synopsis without watching the trailer may think that the protagonist's condition will be treated as a challenge, a limitation. And exactly the opposite happens. To find strength and motivation, the character of Skarsgard adopts the voice of an arcade narrator as its “inner voice”, which is the voice we hear throughout the entire film. All the mannerisms and mannerisms of the voiceovers were transferred to the events of the films and at a certain point, the narration even “hits the hammer” and declares ROUND 2 for the next mind-blowing battle scenes.
The humor was also a delight that almost made me bring the meme to life chef's kiss. I actually had to contain my laughter more than once so it wouldn't echo throughout the movie theater, as the narrator's timbre of voice brings a unique comical tone to the most unlikely scenes. Whether in the fight scenes themselves, or giving voice to the confused thoughts of Height, who needs to read lips to maintain communication (which doesn't always go as expected).
They were jokes and lines of reasoning very characteristic of comics and comics, especially anti-hero ones like Dead Pool, filled with acidic humor, with a very caricatured quality. The protagonist, in himself, is somewhat naive and needy, who has a journey, at the same time, complex and predictable that contributes to this comic book aura. Marvel e D / C.
Now about the fight choreography: the fight movements could be in Street Fighter II and the only thing different would be the graphics, which is obviously not 16-bit. If you blink during a scene like this, you'll miss some epic kick or an incredible gush of blood that goes against any vascular anatomical law.
Boy Kills World is a film that delivers emotion, action, humor and plotwist quality, the kind you don't see in cinemas anymore. A refreshment in the midst of films that try so hard to deliver concepts and end up becoming “just another one” on the Letterboxd list.
Cast

Bill Skarsgård shone beautifully with an interpretation beyond the vocals. His facial body expressions showed how this is one of the greatest actors we have today, even with his tendency.”freaky” eternalized in It - The Thing.
Among other big names in the cast, we have Famke Janssen as Hilda Van Der Koy, the great villain of the story. For those who know her from her role in Hemlock Grove (2013), the similarity is noticeable, but it does not affect the immersion in Hilda's role.
Jessica Rothe (Happy Death Day) is also in the film as June 27, with an incredible characterization worthy of a skin Valorant.
Following the Van Der Koy core, Brett Gelman (Stranger Things) to Michelle dockery (Downtown Abbey), play Hilda's brothers, who are no better than her. In terms of evil, the three make a great team, but the two, in particular, follow a more humorous rhythm.
Other great actors were part of the production: Andrew Kōji (Bullet train); Cameron Crovetti (The Boys); and Yayan Ruhian (The Raid).
Technical Highlights
The film was the German director's first major production. Moritz Mohr, which until then only had the horror short akumi (2005) in the curriculum. The screenwriter Tyler Burton Smith gave the film the comic book feel that I talked about so much, since it has a series of comics published titled Slumber and his cinematic experiences bear this characteristic as a trademark.
Other relevant figures in the independent film market also participated in Boy Kills World:
- Sam Raimi (Evil Dead) - Production
- Peter Matjasko (The Magic Flute) – Photography direction
- Roy Lee (Late Night With the Devil) – Direction, production and executive production.
- Ludwig Forssell (Beautiful ) – Soundtrack composer
So, is Boy Kills World worth it?

I saw the trailer for Boy Kills World and I knew, at that moment, that it would become a favorite. But it won't please everyone, especially those who prefer to consume films linked to reality, who seek tools for reflection in the midst of chaos. No, Boy Kills World It's a film to be watched as player 1 in an arcade: sometimes just enjoying the game, passing the level, and then going home is enough.
Do you like comics? Do you like trashy action movies? Do you like arcade games? Watch it, it will definitely be worth it.
Where to watch?
The film was released in cinemas on 26/04 and is scheduled for release on platforms streaming at the beginning of the next semester.
