Hackers close in on PS5 unlocking; understand

Available for sale just over a year ago, it looks like we're close to seeing an unlock of the PS5. This would be possible thanks to the group of hackers that goes by the name of fail0verflow — the same person responsible for finding security holes in the PlayStation 3 in 2010. So it shouldn't be long before we see illegal media being sold to a PS5 pirate.

If you were a person who lived through the entire generation of PlayStation 2 in Brazil, you certainly know that the console was a real success thanks to the possibility of non-original games being played on the model, right? That wasn't possible on the PS4, but now it looks like Sony hasn't taken the same care when developing the system for its new console. Understand how we will see a PS5 unlocked soon.

PS5 Unlock May Complete Soon

We thought it would take longer to develop a story like this, but it looks like, in fact, we will soon see a PS5 pirate. Last night (07), the group of hackers fail0verflow posted a tweet citing finding the registry keys for the new console that was released by Sony in November 2020. See:

In practice, this means that professionals now have access to the essentials for a PS5 unlock to happen. That's because from now on, the "only" work of professionals is to try to find system files so that non-original content can be played on a PS5 pirate. In addition to other modifications that improve the experience.

It may seem like an easier job at this point, but professionals still need to act and a lot for the unlock to actually happen. But the possibility exists precisely because the registry keys are now available.

How can an unlocked PS5 differentiate itself?

Answering this question opens up more fields than piracy. Depending on the level of the “attack” of the group that is acting so that the PS5 piracy is a reality, we can mention that, in addition to allowing fake media to be played on the console, there can even be a software exchange. On a PS5 unlocked, it may be possible to install the operating system Linux, for example.

Going back a little in time, when the PlayStation 3 was unlocked, this allowed the owners to transfer files that were on a CD to the video game's internal storage without much effort.

Furthermore, it was also possible to downgrade operating system (where you can revert to the previous version if you feel like it, after an upgrade). We also need to remember that many people were able to run emulators from other consoles within the system PlayStation 3, which, as you know, is not possible in the original version of the software. This same group has also managed to get other consoles, such as PS4 e Nintendo Switch, rotate Linux.

In practice, having access to the registry keys can cause an unlocking of the PS5 where the sky is the limit, so we can only wait and see what will be possible once this is completed. It is important to note that not necessarily the PS5 pirate will be able to run games that are not original, but as this has already been done in PlayStation 2, does not mean that it is impossible.

Pirate PS5 shouldn't be easy to get

Despite having access to the registry keys of the PS5, the work must not be easy. Even these words are from the group of hackers. In response to a person who asked if having access to all this would make unlocking the PS5 easier, the hackers were direct: “no.”

So far, the Sony, developer of PlayStation 5, has yet to comment on the matter, but the company is expected to release a security update that addresses this issue. Because, a simple PS5 pirate on the market can already cause financial damage. If this becomes more and more popular, as it was at the time of PlayStation 2, the company may fail to make millions of dollars in sales of exclusive games and even titles third-party.

PS5 unlocking is nothing new

Other specialists have already tried to unlock the PS5, but so far only the group fail0verflow actually stated that it is close to having a console unlocked in just over 1 year of release. 

Andy Nguyen, who works as a security engineer at Google, and has worked for Sony, claims that, in fact, he was able to access the developers version of the system installed on the console, which is called “debug”. But the same also did not mention how this was carried out, as well as there are no plans to make a disclosure.

The hacker group that has access to the registry keys of PS5 didn't mention when the next steps will be released, but now it's time for us to let them work to find out when it will be possible to see a PS5 unlocked.
