Every year, on May 25th, Geek Pride Day is celebrated, and there's nothing better on this day than listing super cool and important movies and series for those who fit this audience. But first, let's talk to you about the date, which was chosen to commemorate the launch of the Episode IV: A New Hope, the first film of the saga Star Wars, a geek culture classic, released on May 25, 1977.
O Nerd Pride Festival, which took place between 1998 and 2000 in New York City, started the celebration of this date. In 2006, the first official commemoration of the date took place, when 300 geeks made a PAC-MAN human in Madrid. At that same event, an unpretentious manifesto was made about the rights and responsibilities of the geek community, giving indications that Geek Pride was gaining strength.

And the culmination of the Geek Pride Day celebration is due to the Towel Day. And this reason has a first and last name: Douglas Adams, author of the book series The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. On this day, it is common for fans of the saga to post photos, videos and montages with a towel on the web, in memory of the author. And, for those who don't know, here's the explanation: the towel inside the Guide is one of the most useful items for the interstellar backpacker, being able to serve as shelter, weapon and, of course, have a high affective value.
When geeks noticed the coincidence about the release of A new hope with the date already pre-established by Adams' fans, two weeks after the author's death, in 2001, a day of pride and many coincidences emerged. With the realization and common agreement, May 25th became the day to celebrate and promote geek culture in the world.
This year, the showmetech brings 10 movies that every geek should watch — not necessarily the most well-known movies, but those that bring the geek theme well established in their scripts
academy of geniuses
Starring Val Kilmer — who you might know as the Batman from Batman Forever academy of geniuses tells the story of a super smart professor who was hired by the CIA to build a laser weapon capable of assassinating political targets. academy of geniuses it is a cult film, which when it was released did not find great popularity in theaters, but nowadays it is seen as a great classic that relies on physics concepts at all times to explain how inventions work.
academy of geniuses can be assisted by R$9,99 on iTunes.
The social network
Made in 2010, when the Facebook it was already giant but not the colossus it is today, The social network (The Social Network) tells the story of the foundation of the social network, featuring Mark Zuckerberg and his plans to create Facebook. Although the real Zuckerberg does not accept it as a 100% true version of the story, the movie is still very interesting and relevant, after all, Facebook is part of many people's lives, much more than when the movie was released.
The social network can be watched on HBOGO.
The Big Bang Theory
If you've been in any social cycle in the last 10 years you've probably had a colleague who turned to you after making a joke and sent a "Bazinga". Good, The Big Bang Theory is responsible for that. Starring four extremely geeky scientists who begin to have their dynamics modified after gaining a beautiful neighbor, the series to this day has its wide range of fans, as well as its wide range of haters.
Looking at The Big Bang Theory critically, we have a very common sitcom, but on the surface it has so many references to comics, board games, video games and even interactions between fans, it managed to win over thousands. As much as, nowadays, its sexist tones can be observed more easily, there is still a palpable humor that justifies its popularity.
The Big Bang Theory can be watched on GloboPlay.
Ela
Before being the Joker, Joaquin Phoenix played a lonely man who, in the future, falls in love with his computer's operating system, played by Scarlett Johansson, which works as a super updated version of the virtual assistants we have today. Showing the love between Phoenix's character and the AI, who sees the world through cameras, the film is charming, albeit a little heavy at times. It's worth seeing.
you can watch Ela (Here) No. GloboPlay.
the circle
The scenario of current social networks has very complicated tones, if we analyze it in a deeper way. Our information is constantly being accessed by large corporations, and we don't even feel that much anymore. But what if this keeps getting stronger and stronger, to the point that by the time we want to complain, it's already too late? That's what the circle explores, featuring Tom Hanks and Emma Watson in a film that brings these questions to the fore very well, and that perhaps sounds a little more familiar than it did at the time.
the circle (The Circle) can be assisted by R$3,90 on Google Play ou R$7,90 on iTunes.
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
O geek pride day is also known as Towel Day, on account of a passage from the book The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy who told every adventurer to always carry a towel. This has taken root in popular culture, to the point where it has become synonymous with nerd and geek culture.
There is a movie based on the book of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which although not as well accepted as the book, is quite fun. The film is not on any Brazilian streaming service, but every good geek knows ways to watch it… using a VPN to watch on Hulu in the USA.
H
Telling the story of trying to produce a clone of IBM computers in the 1980s, H is a very interesting drama, which shows the invasion of computers in people's homes, starting the path for them to become what they are today. Another merit of the series is how there are episodes that take place entirely around more technical information, such as computer BIOS, and even so the series manages to be interesting.
H can be assisted on GloboPlay.
Rick and Morty
Ironic, crazy, extremely heavy at times but super fun. This is the best possible description for Rick and Morty, an adult swim cartoon, which tells the adventures of mad scientist Rick and his somewhat incapable grandson Morty. The adventures that take shape throughout its seasons are funny because of their excess, although, undeniably, at times, somewhat philosophical questions are posed by the characters.
Rick and Morty is available at Netflix.
Silicon Valley
Silicon Valley is a series that during its 6 seasons shows how Silicon Valley, the region in the USA where most of the giant technology companies are located, is changing over time. The series is also quite ironic, constantly dropping small hints and making fun of companies like Google and Facebook.
The main cast is made up of characters who embody different facets of nerd stereotypes, and their struggle to turn their company into something that has a positive impact on the world, even fighting billion dollar corporations, is cool and fun to watch. The series is available to be watched in Brazil by the service HBO Go.
Westworld
Westworld It's almost like a Jurassic Park from a western, where the premise is that a world created by scientists is populated by androids who behave like cowboys, but who can feel and even hurt like humans. As the series evolves, more and more possibilities arise and the discussion about how to differentiate between androids and people takes over the series, as well as ethics. It's a great journey, which can be watched on HBO Go.
2001: Uma Odisseia no Espaço
The absolute classic of science fiction cinema, directed by Stanley Kubrick, 2001 tells the story of a space trip that goes wrong when the on-board computer, HAL-9000, starts making its own decisions. What follows is a huge journey that passes through many of humanity's senses, a true journey, ending in one of the most iconic scenes in cinema.
You can watch 2001 on HBOGO.
