Delete unnecessary files
The first step of this tip is simple. You need to go to:
- hold the key Windows + i to open the settings (you can open it by clicking on the gear that appears in the start menu).
- Please click System.
- Please click Storage.
- Click on the partition or HD/SSD you want to analyze.

A list based on file type is displayed, with music, apps and games, documents and more. Click on any of these and you will be taken to the folders where these files are. If you find that you don't need some photos, music or other files anymore, just delete it mercilessly.
You can also click, within the storage part, on Temporary files. There you can remove files that are in the downloads folder, in the recycle bin, eliminate a previous version of Windows and even delete temporary files in general.
Returning once again to the part where the file types are listed, you can click on Others and a list of the folders that are taking up the most space will be displayed. Click on each of the folders and, if you think you no longer need them, you can delete them.
Erase previous file versions
A very nice feature of Windows 10 is a version history of some documents and files, which only works on external HD. It allows you to go back and prevent any changes that went wrong. However, this tool makes the HD fill up faster, which is not good – after all, the system creates several versions of the same file.
To turn off version history:
- Press Windows + X and open the Control Panel.
- Please click File History.
- In the Versions, leave the basics which is to save copies of files every 12h and keep saved versions of up to three months.
- Please click clear versions.
- In the box that appears, select all but the last.
- Please click Clean and then in Save editions.
Backup your photos and videos to the cloud
It's nice to be able to have the whole photo story inside the computer, but if you don't have space to put a new game, the story changes. One of the ways to keep everything at your fingertips is to put it in the cloud. You can choose the OneDrive, which comes native to Windows 10, or another service like Google Drive e Dropbox. The smartest of all is the Google Photos, which offers unlimited space for photos up to 16 megapixels and videos up to Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels, or 1080p).
You can ask Google Photos to automatically monitor a specific folder, such as Images, and upload anything that appears as a new photo there.
Remove apps/programs you no longer use
This tip seems silly, but there are a lot of programs that you haven't used in a long time, like a music player that you tested and used only once. Or even a game that has already zeroed, but is still installed. To remove it just:
- Enter into Settings (can be pressing Windows + i).
- Please click System.
- Please click Apps and Resources.

From the list, just choose what you want to remove. You can sort the list by program size, or even install date – perfect for removing that app you just installed but didn't like.
Erase old versions of Windows.
If you upgraded from an old version of Windows to Windows 10, you most likely have an old copy of the previous system installed still in memory. This tool exists to save you from a regret of the migration, being possible to return to the previous Windows. The problem is that this backup is heavy, spacious.
To remove old Windows:
- tab to Disc Cleanning (just start typing “Cleaning” in the Windows 10 universal search, which is next to the Start button and it will appear).
- Please click Clean system files.
- Select Previous installation(s) of Windows.
- Please click OK and then in Delete files.
There, you can save, just by deleting the old Windows installation, up to 15 GB.
So, did it save you? How much of your HD did you free up? Tell us below.
