After resulting in books, RPGs, online and table games, applications, and in an animated series known in Brazil as “Dragon Cave”, Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) is about to win a movie. Apparently, the Paramount is in the early stages for the feature and intends to release it in July 2021.
The idea of making the feature came from the hole left for the medieval fantasy franchise market since the end of “The Lord of the Rings”, and more recently, “The hobbit”. Another movie based on a game, "Warcraft - The First Meeting of Two Worlds" threatened to take that position, however, the film was not so well received as to take this role.
But this wouldn't be the first time the world's best-known medieval RPG has turned into a feature. The film "Dungeons & Dragons The Adventure Begins Now” was released in 2000, and told the story of a young empress determined to use her powers for good, but she is deposed by a diabolical magician and must control the Red Dragons to regain the throne. However, with a negative reception from both the public and critics, which resulted in a loss of 12 million dollars, a new movie from D&D seemed out of the question. Yet.
About the movie
Nothing is really known about the project at the moment, which has been shelved for some time (and apparently moved from the Warner Bros. for Paramount). Last year, rumors were that David leslie johnson, screenwriter of Clash of the Titans 2, would write, while Rob Letterman, director of “Goosebumps” and “Shark Scare”, he would direct.
More rumors claimed that the studio was looking for an actor similar to Vin Diesel (who, by the way, is a fan of the game) for the feature, which would be about “a warrior and his band of mystical creatures – including a half dragon and a cunning gnome, who embark on a perilous journey to find a mythical treasure.”
The news site Deadline had also said that the film was beginning to be born, and that actor Ansel Elgort, from “Baby Driver” and “A Fault in Our Stars”, was the most quoted to star in the feature. However, with the recent changes, the project can start from scratch.

Broadcast on the defunct TV Globinho in the mid-2000s, the animated series based on Dungeons and Dragons has always been very successful among Brazilians. So much so that, to this day, the cartoon is fondly remembered by those who grew up watching the 27 episodes on the small screen.
The series certainly served as a dissemination of this RPG, which has existed since 1974, when it was created by the American writer Gary gygax, in partnership with Dave Arneson. The game is even considered the first RPG about medieval fantasy ever made.
The cartoon followed six American children from the 1980s, who tried to return to their world after arriving in the Kingdom of Dungeons & Dragons on a roller coaster ride.
References in pop culture
But it's not just the design that Dungeons and Dragons was present. The brand also served as an influence for the creation of several films and series that we know today, such as Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones. In addition to being widely referenced in various pop culture media. Do you doubt?
The RPG is mentioned several times in the famous series “The Big Bang Theory", including serving as the basis for an episode of the sixth season of the series, in which the protagonists needed to save Santa Claus in a match of D&D.
Growing up in a time when the game was hot, the creators of the series geek number 1 at the moment, Stranger Things, also don't hide their adoration for the game, making it clear that it was a fever of the 80s. D&D has already been mentioned in several episodes of the series, in addition to being the tabletop RPG that children play, right in the first appearance of the characters Dustin, Mike, Will and Lucas, in the series.

sitcoms like Community e Freaks and Geeks there have also been episodes talking about the RPG, which even appears in musical lyrics.
The song In The Garage, from the American rock band, weezeer, says in one part of the song, the following sentence: “I've got the Dungeon Master's Guide. I've got a 12-sided dice“. Which, in free translation, would be "I have the master's guide of Dungeon. I have a 12-sided die.”
