The world was heartbroken at this Monday (15/04) when news broke that the iconic Cathedral of Our Lady, in the heart of Paris, was on fire. The building, which is considered one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture, is over 800 years old and is a huge part of French history.

The fire, which continued through the night, was extinguished as of this morning, and plans for the restoration of the building are already underway. However, the base material that will be used for the renovation of the building is more unusual than you can imagine.
A game saving Notre Dame
According to reports, the building will be restored as close to its original glory as possible, meaning architects and builders will study hyper-realistic photos and videos of the cathedral to recreate it as faithfully as possible.
For this reason, one of the digital works cited to help with the restoration is none other than the game. Assassin's Creed Unity from Ubisoft. Caroline Miousse, the artist responsible for various aspects of the game's digital art, spoke to the website The Verge a few years ago about creating the cathedral in the game.

“In the case of Notre Dame, easily the biggest structure in the game, this meant recreating a version of the cathedral that didn’t actually exist at the time.”
“The level artist, Miousse, has literally spent years discussing the details of the building. She pored over photos to get the architecture right and worked with texture artists to ensure each piece was as it was meant to be. ”
According to a report by experts in engineering and architecture of historic buildings and constructions, the 3D mapping developed in the game is so faithful to reality that it will be the greatest tool of aid in the restoration of one of the most famous structures in France.

It is not yet known how extensive the damage to Notre Dame after the fire was, and the cause of the incident is still unknown at the moment the facts about this tragedy are still being ascertained.
At the time of its release in 2014(currently the most recent title is Odyssey), Assassin's Creed Unity received a lot of criticism about the absurd amount of bugs and glitches that seriously hampered the player's experience. Currently, most of the game's problems have already been fixed through updates. It's ironic how one of the most controversial games in the Ubisoft franchise will now help save history alive.
