In the midst of the water and energy crisis that raises an alert to the risk of energy rationing in Brazil, a new labeling of the Inmetro was established to encourage lower consumption of refrigerators from June 2022. These appliances represent 30% of electricity consumption in the country, and it is essential to increase the energy efficiency of equipment to reduce the risk of a blackout. And if you are looking for a new refrigerator, we have good news: refrigerators Samsung already meet the A+++ rating, which represents an efficiency up to 30% higher than the A current Inmetro.
New Inmetro labeling takes place in 3 phases
O Brazilian Labeling Program (EBP) of Inmetro, created in 2001, aims to test and classify home appliances, electronics, vehicles and more products into 24 categories, according to their energy efficiency. This classification is based on testing the products in laboratories certified by Inmetro, which currently classify them into five categories, from the most efficient (category A) to the least efficient (category E).

Ordinance No. 332, of August 2, 2021, provides for three stages for the implementation of the new labeling of the Inmetro. In the first stage, which takes effect from June 2022, a new classification for refrigerators will include the following subclasses:
- A+: 10% more efficient than the A rating
- A++: 20% more efficient than the A rating
- A+++: 30% more efficient than the A rating
These subclasses of Inmetro's new labeling will be valid until 2026, when they will cease to exist and give rise to the classification from A (most efficient) to F (least efficient), with updated and more demanding criteria than those established by the United Nations. According to Jorge Nascimento, president of the electronics (National Association of Manufacturers of Electro-electronic Products), products will have to make a substantial leap to remain in the category of greater energy efficiency.
Our products will have to show a 40% reduction in energy consumption to remain in subclass A in this second phase
Jorge Nascimento, president of Eletros
As of 2031, the third phase of the new Inmetro labeling for refrigerators will come into force, which provides for higher efficiency levels than those currently practiced in the European Union. According to the provisions for this last phase, refrigerators sold in Brazil must conform to the Tropical Class, in which they must be able to maintain a temperature of -18ºC in the refrigerator when in an external environment of 43ºC.
Samsung refrigerators already fall into the A+++ class of the PBE
According to electronics, only 5% of the refrigerators sold in the country meet the criteria established for the A+++ class, and Samsung is the only manufacturer that currently has products in the main categories of refrigerators that meet the highest criteria of the new Inmetro labeling. Among the models in the refrigerator portfolio Samsung, there is at least one model in class A+++ in the categories Duplex, Inverse duplex, French Door e Side by Side. Technologies such as the Digital Inverter compressor, which makes less noise and can save up to 50% of energy, are part of the brand's innovations in energy efficiency.
The concern with reducing energy consumption is a global trend, and in situations of scarcity of rain and a consequent energy crisis like the one we are experiencing in Brazil, this issue becomes even more important. Meeting the highest international standards of efficiency and sustainability, Samsung has anticipated itself by offering products that already correspond to the new Brazilian standards.
