The second week of November 2022 was marked by the GitHub Universe 2022, a major annual event used by the company to promote news to the developer market in Brazil and around the world.
O showmetech had the opportunity to speak with Julio Viana, Regional Manager of GitHub in Brazil, about how technology professionals currently use the tool on several fronts and how the Brazilian community has grown, which is already the third largest outside the US, behind only India e China. Check all the details right now.
Developer market in Brazil still has flaws
Between October 2021 and 2022, 924 Brazilian developers registered with GitHub, a membership that helped the total number reach around 3 million. This feat gave Brazil the title of the third largest developer community outside the US.
In addition, Julio Viana remember that we still have a lot to improve in terms of processes. A lot of investment in people is needed for Brazil to become an even greater reference when it comes to software development.
Brazil has a gap, an absurdly large lack of developers. So we need to have a greater coverage of people today because we simply don't have anyone to hire. We have one gap for the absurdly large Brazilian market. As much as it has grown, Brazil is still the third largest market outside the United States, second only to India and China.
Julio Viana, Regional Manager of GitHub in Brazil
He comments that despite the number of Brazilians registered in the GitHub having grown, there is still much to be done and mainly that the demand for projects is not in accordance with the number of projects available. The solution to the problem lies in companies investing in training programs for all Brazilians.
I think the big problem is access to information, universities and training. by itself. Today in Brazil, we have several programs that large companies are starting to sponsor to bring this capacity to the neediest communities to provide, providing this type of thing, better access to developer training.
Julio Viana, Regional Manager of GitHub in Brazil
Around the world, there are around 94 million developers who work daily on GitHub and the number of 100 million is expected to be reached soon. At the same time, the lack of people still affects the world and mainly companies. It's hard to say how big the demand from the business market is, since the data is quite private, but Brazil needs to invest in people as soon as possible.
Corporate environments are shielded, but we have a lot of growth capacity and a great need in our country. This is a global problem, but in Brazil, it is still a critical problem.
Julio Viana, Regional Manager of GitHub in Brazil
Julio pointed out that the Southeast region concentrates most developers in Brazil, but there are many relevant hubs in the Northeast, with emphasis on Pernambuco. Florianópolis it is the city that most stands out in the South region and both regions are quite equal in terms of relevance. Brasilia comes soon after, but with a slightly smaller region of professionals.
Brazilian fintechs are big fans of GitHub
Julio Viana shared in the chat he had with the showmetech that 95% of Brazilian fintechs use GitHub in your day to day to take care of all demands. One of the successful cases includes the Nubank, which was born and still operates within the platform as one of the largest banks in Brazil. Viana also comments that large companies are using the GitHub in the modernization process.
We can say that the enterprise environment is one of the largest in Brazil. Via Varejo, a theoretically old company, with a legacy of very heavy code, has modernized and reinvented itself within GitHub. Ford, a century-old company, is now using GitHub on a large scale and more recently in Brazil, it is also a huge success story with us.
Julio Viana, Regional Manager of GitHub in Brazil
Another Brazilian company that uses the GitHub is Itaú, which currently handles the entire development process on the development platform. The bank operates with its website, application and other financial transactions.
How Brazil has grown so much on GitHub in 12 months
The executive points out that the desire of Brazilians to grow within different markets was essential for so many new registrations to be carried out within the period of 365 days. Viana also says that professionals have unique characteristics.
The Brazilian developer has a characteristic that stands out a lot if you compare it with the rest of the world. He is a developer with a creative and innovative capacity greater than what we expect from professionals in another part of the world. He is somewhat self-taught. The Brazilian community lacks access to information, access to universities and access to training academies. So she becomes very self-taught, even with few resources.
Julio Viana, Regional Manager of GitHub in Brazil
He highlights that the GitHub stands out for being a free tool for everyone who is interested in using the tool. All you need is the will to use it and an email address and that's it, access will be free.
And more than that, with everything that we're putting out there today, like the release of Copilot, there's support for exponentiating that kind of learning and code adoption curve in a much simpler and faster way. There is no doubt that there is still a very positive market ahead in our country.

GitHub Copilot opt-in

Launched for individual developers in June 2022, the event held in November of the same year brought the news that the software development assistant will finally be released for companies. The company is excited to take this step that will help companies serving diverse markets.
By December 2022, we will launch Copilot for companies. Once released, the tool will be consumed in the same way as in environments open source, but with a particular characteristic of having the ability to learn much more focused on its environment.
Julio Viana, Regional Manager of GitHub in Brazil
The executive also recalled that the launch announced during the GitHub Universe 2022 is quite expected by companies and hope that a new stage in the use of the tool will be inaugurated. People working on open source projects have access to Copilot, but in terms of companies, security is being treated as a higher priority.
We are very concerned about code security, from project conception to production delivery. Imagine if you order an iFood with your app that is crashing or with a code vulnerability when paying with a credit card? This is critical and very serious.
Julio Viana, Regional Manager of GitHub in Brazil
With the extensive knowledge of all documented process steps and the broad view of the professionals working on the project, errors are easier to detect and, of course, correct.
When you start fixing this kind of thing right from the creation of the product, the project is much cheaper and we still avoid a code vulnerability in production exposed to the market. It is much cheaper if everything is taken care of from the beginning.
Julio Viana, Regional Manager of GitHub in Brazil
Julio agrees that companies need to understand that the development process is continuous and the delivery process is just one part of the process rather than the end.
Many companies that were born in the digital environment already understand this since their foundation. They already have it in their DNA. The more traditional companies have already come to understand this and are entering this learning and adoption curve. As much as it still has a somewhat traditional mentality. Of course, with the hacking attempts, information hijacking, information and server hijacking, all that kind of stuff. They are already adapting, already adopting a more characteristic and mentality.s cloud native with development focused on agility rather than being a software company.

Github Sponsors

Ending the interview, July recalled the company's program that allows the sponsorship of open source projects, which also includes remuneration. Brazil is one of the countries that most participate in the program and is even among the top 10 countries with most accepted projects.
From the moment we launched it, globally speaking, Brazil immediately became the top 10, because Brazilians continue to collaborate and place relevant projects and contribute to the world software community in a very fast and massive way. That's saying a lot for GitHub and for the developer interested in seeking sponsorship. Nowadays, all you have to do is open our platform and look for a job, sponsorship and whatever else is necessary for everything to get off the ground. You manage to do both things in a very simple and very fast way. A few more years and this will be a reality for many countries around the world, including the United States.
Julio Viana, Regional Manager of GitHub in Brazil
Brazilians are very creative and more companies need to pay attention to this type of professional so that good projects can be put into practice.
I saw a recent project of a tablet reading assistant, where it made animations according to the content of a book. You read aloud to the tablet and it could recognize your voice as well as what you were reading. So, animations were created that help understanding and also influence reading from a very early age.
Julio Viana, Regional Manager of GitHub in Brazil
The registration of projects can be done directly in the official GitHub Sponsors page, by any user who has an account on the software development tool.
