Solution aims to help separate original photos from creations and edits with artificial intelligence. See how it will work

Many users around the world take their photos on their smartphones and use AI tools to adjust them. The Google Photos, quite common in smartphones Android, has several of these tools that help users. But how do you know if you are seeing a AI altered image? The Google will release an update soon that will make this identification easier. Check it out!

New transparency policy

The use of artificial intelligence to enhance photos has become increasingly accessible, facilitating edits that were previously complex and time-consuming. Some tools present in Google Photos allow adjustments ranging from simple cropping to removing unwanted objects, improving lighting, and even creating new compositions. What once required time and skill can now be done quickly with the help of AI.

As these tools reach more users, Google reinforces its commitment to the responsible use of artificial intelligence, following its AI Principles. To increase transparency, the company announced that, starting next week, the Google Photos will display an indication whenever a photo has been edited with the help of AI, directly in the app.

Photos edited with tools like Magic Editor, Magic Eraser e Zoom Enhance already contain metadata following the technical standards of International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC), which indicate the use of generative AI. This information will now be visible internally alongside data such as file name, location, and backup status in the app.

Additionally, images created with elements from different photos, such as the function Best Take us models Pixel 8 e Pixel 9, or Add Me on the Pixel 9, they will also have this indication. These features combine photos captured in sequence to create an ideal image, suggested for group photos.

While we are optimistic about the potential of AI, we recognize that advanced technologies can raise important challenges that must be addressed clearly, thoughtfully, and assertively. These AI Principles outline our commitment to developing technology responsibly and working to establish specific areas of application that we will not pursue.

How to identify photo with AI

Identifying AI-edited photos can be done in a variety of ways, especially when transparency is applied by AI-powered platforms and tools. Here are a few methods for identifying such photos:

  • Image Verification Tools: There are specialized software and tools that can analyze images and identify manipulations, including AI-driven edits. These programs can detect subtle changes in pixel structure and changes in metadata.
  • Image metadata: As we mentioned above, photos edited with AI in apps like Google Photos contain information in the metadata, following international standards. This metadata indicates whether AI was used and which tool made the edit. This data can be accessed directly in the app or in software that allows reading metadata.
  • In-app instructions: In the case of Google Photos, starting with an update, the app will display a notification next to image information, such as file name, location, and backup status, clearly showing when AI was used in the edit. Other AI-powered photo editing apps have also started to join this initiative.
  • Visual analysis: While AI is becoming increasingly accurate, it’s possible to spot some visual cues in edited photos. These can include unnaturally perfect elements like an unnaturally smooth background, poorly aligned shadows, or blurred edges around removed or added objects. On the other hand, unusual features can also give this away, like a human hand with six fingers.

Why is it important?

Transparency in the use of artificial intelligence in photo editing is crucial to ensuring reliability and authenticity of images. With AI enabling complex and realistic alterations, it’s important for users to know when a photo has been manipulated. This helps maintain trust in a variety of contexts, such as social media, news, or personal archives, where the line between real and edited can become blurred.

This transparency reflects a commitment to ethics and responsibility. AI enables such sophisticated alterations that it is often difficult to distinguish what is real from what has been created or modified. By reporting when AI has been used, companies like Google show that they are aware of the risks of misinformation or improper manipulation, while preserving the integrity of the images.

Another important point is the user control. Knowing that a photo has been edited with AI allows users to make more informed decisions about how they want to share their images, especially in areas where visual accuracy is essential, such as journalism or documentation.

And we cannot fail to mention that transparency in photo editing also promotes greater clarity in content creation. As the use of AI becomes increasingly common, it is essential that people understand how these technologies influence the content they consume and produce, reinforcing responsibility and ethics in the use of advanced editing tools.
