Imagine having access to premium versions of apps and games for a monthly fee. This is basically the concept of the Google Play Pass, a new subscription service that arrived in Brazil this Monday (07).
The new service will offer access to over 650 apps and games, which will have no ads, internal purchases or the need for cash payment, for Android phones and tablets. According to Google, every month new apps and games will be added to the subscriber package.
“Google Play has always been about connecting people to the best apps, games and digital content out there. But we know that everyone has different habits, so we are launching a new way to enjoy these digital experiences.”
Austin Shoemaker, Product Manager, Google Play Group
In addition to Brazil, the Google Play Pass arrived in Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru. You can try the new service for free for 10 days and then subscribe to the monthly plan for R$9,90 or the annual plan for R$89,90. To start the trial period, you will need to open the Play Store app, click on the menu in the upper left corner and search for Play Pass.
See below for more details on how the new subscription service will work and examples of what it will bring.
How Google Play Pass will work
First launched in the United States in September 2019, the Google Play Pass guarantees access to a collection that ranges from games to relax to applications aimed at productivity. The titles will be included in the subscription package through a curatorship, according to the Google. The titles that, at first, will be part of the Play Pass range from the game Stardew Valley to the informational app AccuWeather.
“The Play Pass encourages people to experience new things they wouldn't have known otherwise.”
Maria Sayans, CEO of Ustwo games
Every month, subscribers will have access to "fresh" news. The idea, according to Google, is to always have content for the user to discover and explore. Incidentally, the Google informed that among the releases that should arrive soon on the Play Store and Google Play Pass are the games This War of Mine e Cytus.
Will appear for subscribers a tab called Play Pass, which will be part of the Play Store. And the apps and games included in the service subscription will continue to be available on Play Store, only with a “label” written Play Pass. In practice, the user will be able to explore what is part of their subscription either by searching the Play Store or scrolling through the Play Pass feed. Here's what this feed will look like:
The subscription package, according to the company, will bring games and applications created by Brazilian developers – among them, Sudoku e Crossword Puzzle Free – and international games, such as Terraria, Monument Valley, Risk e Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
It will also be possible to make afamily subscription”, shareable with up to five people. This part will work similarly to the Google Play Family Library.
“Each will have individual access to the Play Pass, so what one person downloads doesn’t influence what others see.”
Austin Shoemaker, Product Manager, Google Play Group
Among the titles that bring “content for the family”, as described by Google, are apps from Touch mouth and the game series My Town.
