The Government of the State of São Paulo sanctioned the law No. 17.612 that allows the creation of Railway Subsystem of the State of São Paulo (SFE/SP) and the use of the railroad modal that will allow the transport of cargo and people. This should help lessen not only road congestion, but also lessen accidents.
It is likely that the first route made available to the population will be between the capital of São Paulo and the city of Campinas, as the process started in April 2022. Check out all the details right now.
Railways will be used to transport cargo and people
You may not know it, but only 50% of the railway network in the state of São Paulo is used by companies that have government authorization. In total, half of the 5 kilometers of track, in addition to being used to transport people through the CPTM, are used to transport loads of all kinds and are taken to Greater São Paulo by federal concessionaires. Rumo, MRS and VLI.

To change this scenario and allow 100% of the railways to be used for the transport of people and cargo, the Government of SP sanctioned a new law that will reactivate the deactivated tracks.

According to the official communiqué published in the Official Gazette, the state will opt for the models called shortlines (short lines) rail transportation. In practice, short trips will be made, probably between cities further away from the capital of the state of São Paulo, currently accessible only by road or air transport.
The railway sector is essential for the State of São Paulo, being extremely important for the Brazilian GDP. It is also a more sustainable means of transport, which will generate more development and jobs.
João Octaviano Machado Neto, State Secretary for Logistics and Transport
The reactivation of railways should also increase energy efficiency and the safe use of technology and innovation, prioritizing comfort and improving the quality of life of service users. Other modes of transport must be integrated so that the best possible use is made.
Intercity Train (TIC)
In April 2022, the Government of the State of São Paulo signed an agreement with the CPTM so that people can travel between the capital and the city of Campinas. O Intercity train will have its starting point at Barra Funda station, make a stop in Jundiaí and then continue on to Campinas🇧🇷 Governor-elect Tarcísio de Freitas promised that the notice will be released by the end of the first half of 2023.

Back to the law passed on December 20, 2022, there are three ways to reactivate the currently unused railroads: special authorization, concession or PPP (Public-Private Partnerships). It is expected that more details will be disclosed with the arrival of the new year and this form of transport will facilitate even more the transport between more distant cities and that are still not served by the CPTM.
It is worth remembering that, currently, residents of cities in Greater São Paulo can reach the state capital with just one train trip. This should be magnified with the launch of TIC. How much would you pay for a train trip between São Paulo and Campinas? Tell us us Comment!
