O Instagram announced yesterday (18) that it will no longer allow third-party applications to have access to the social network's API. In practice, apps like Flow for Instagram and Padgram will no longer exist. The decision was communicated in an official post, which states that the change is “to improve control over content and create a more sustainable environment built around authentic experiences on the platform”.
A possible motivation for this change was the security problem explored by the InstaAgent, a service that promised to reveal the last people who viewed profiles on Instagram, that it was sending people's login data to a remote server.
The creation of new tools such as the Boomerang may also be behind this decision. With the platform restriction, the Instagram can focus on creating and improving these products that are now part of the experience.
Developers who want to create applications with the Instagram will need to go through a evaluation, which will open in December. Only a few functions will be allowed, such as permission to edit photos and the ability to read photos that the user himself has uploaded over the network. Viewing the full timeline will not be allowed.
Developers who already have apps have until July 2016 to comply with Instagram's new API policies. Details can be found on this page.
