According to source, Apple will use Intel's 5G modem to bring the technology to the iPhone

If on the one hand we have the Qualcomm distributing 5G connection antennas for Android smartphones, on the other, we have the Apple preparing their futures iPhone to embrace new technology. According to a source at Fast Company, Apple has been working with Intel and its new mobile modem, which will likely make its appearance in the company's 2020 handsets:

iPhone with 5G connection may arrive a little late

Apple's new release, iPhone XS has not yet appeared in Brazil.

With Qualcomm confirming the arrival of the 5G connection on smartphones launched from 2019, it was expected that the Apple did not fall behind and already included the technology in the next generation of the iPhone.

However, it does not appear that this will materialize, as a source who has access to the plans of the Apple says the company isn't too happy with the progress of Intel's 8060 modem optimisations. According to this same person, this test chip – which needs a better heat dissipation system – would be the predecessor of the 8161 modem, candidate to appear in the iPhone launched in 2020.

A 5G connection is more prone to this type of problem given its ability to operate on various types of frequencies. That is, the higher the frequency, the more effort will be required on the part of the chip in question. Another important detail about this new 8161 modem from Intel is the type of fabrication to be used: here, we have only 10 nanometers.

Despite this situation, the Apple should not turn to Qualcomm, since, according to the chipset maker, Apple would owe about US $ 7 billion in royalties. In fact, the war in the courts started in 2017 and continues to this day.

Waiting is the best solution

Brazilian operators should deliver 5G only in 2020.

While everyone is looking forward to revolutionary changes in smartphones, rushing this kind of work can result in problematic launches. In addition, if such information is indeed true, it will be in accordance with the work done by Apple in the last years.

O iPhone 5, for example, was the company's first smartphone compatible with 4G connection. It was only released in 2012, approximately two years after the same technology arrived on Android devices.

In Brazil, 5G connection should also arrive in 2020, as the Brazilian operators are rushing to offer the service in national territory. Until then, follow Showmetech for more news.
