victor pacheco avatar
Among the models launched this year, which one has the best camera? Does the more expensive model really deliver better images? That's what we'll find out in this comparison

If you are in doubt whether to buy the iPhone XR ou XS, the camera is certainly the item that will help in the tiebreaker. Both models share several specifications, but the XS  It has two lenses on the rear camera.

In its 64 GB version, the iPhone XS is costing in Brazil the value of R$7.299,00 and   iPhone XR can be purchased (64 GB model) for R$5.199,00. But stopping to think: does the additional investment of R$ 2.100,00 make us have better images?

Well, in this article we put the two models face to face, and this comparison will help you decide which one is best for you.

Know the specs of the models

The new iPhones were already announced by Apple during an event held in September of this year, so we already know the specifications of all models which we will compare in this post. As we said above, the iPhone XS has a second lens that allows for 2x optical zoom, an option that is not present on the XR.

General photos and videos

Looking at the results on phone displays can seem confusing, because the two phones use different display technology. O iPhone XS has a OLED screen, which shows richer colors and deeper blacks than iPhone XR LCD screen, which delivers more different colors with less contrast.

And even if you compare two images captured with cell phones on a computer, it will also be difficult to see the differences when it comes to everyday photos (landscape, objects or selfies). But this has an explanation: both of them features practically the same camera specs. O iPhone XR It has a 12 MP wide-angle lens with an f1.8 aperture, and optical image stabilization.

This is also the main lens of the iPhone XS, and it's the one you'll use to take most of your photos that aren't in portrait or zoom mode. Os dois also features os same sensors of image, the same software for processing, and even the new Smart HDR feature that Apple included in the cameras of the iPhones XS, XS Max and XR. It's worth noting that the XS Max also has the same dual rear camera as the XS, and it only has a larger screen.

Results: vibrant colors, balanced highlights and shadows, and the image delivered looks like crisp. The same applies to videos. both the iPhone XS how much o XR are among the best smartphones to produce videos, whether you are a cinematographer or just a person who wants to capture fun videos of your kids.

Selfies

They are also extremely similar. Both the models features an 7 megapixel front camera who is able to perceive depth. Named by Apple itself as “TrueDepth”, this is the feature that allows unlocking the cell phone by FaceID.

In the picture, the XS

Although the famous iPhone X was the only cell phone from the Apple company to use various lighting effects directly in the camera interface, the iPhone XR can access the same settings as the iPhone XS from the front camera. Which means that in this respect, there is also no difference.

Zoom: the first difference noticed

At this point, we can see the first difference between the two smartphones, as the iPhone XS uses the second lens as a 2x optical zoom and then switches to digital zoom. O  XR exclusively uses digital zoom.

This means that the photos and videos with the same magnification as 2x will be sharper in model XS than on the XR. That because the iPhone XR only relies on the software to capture the photo, while the other model has a lens just for that. The quality of the content will obviously be better.

The iPhone XS has two rear lenses, so it delivers a better zoom

We can also say that the use in XS will easier, as it has a shortcut in the camera interface that allows easy access to the dedicated zoom lens. That same button also transforms into a slider tool that allows for up to 10x one-handed zooming. The XR model requires you to do this manually, and without the slider. THE capture of content gets much more difficult in iPhone XR.

Winner in this regard: iPhone XS, for ease of use.

Portrait Mode

The first difference noted in this aspect is the distance which the photos appear to have been captured. An image taken with the iPhone XR gives the impression that whoever took the photo was much further away than someone who had a iPhone XS.

This happens because the XR use the wide angle lens, which gives a “greater view”, while the XS uses the telephoto lens, giving the impression that the image was captured from a closer angle. the iPhone XR delivery nicer pictures than the XS, and the blurring effect on the more expensive model appears to be more natural, especially if worn around a person's body.

iPhone XS delivers better portrait mode, but camera is more “closed”

portrait mode on XR wasn't activated fast enough to capture a moving child, so only the XS was able to produce the blurred background effect.

Os youtube filmed in iPhone XR are sharper, and in addition, you will have a greater angle to work. The disadvantage of having a lens with a larger angle at the XR it's that he seems to distort as borders of the photo, as if focused on the person closest to the lens.

iphone xr portrait mode
Portrait mode is more open on the iPhone XR

A rather peculiar setting is that the Portrait mode of the XR is limited to recognizing humans (yes), while the XS recognizes humans, animals, plants, food and any other object inanimate. It may be that the Apple add this feature in a future update, but for now, you'll have to use third-party apps to not see the message: "no one detected" on your screen.  XR.

Winner in this category: iPhone XS, but the XR is good in different situations If you have time to frame the photos.

Photos with low lighting

This is the question on which the iPhone XR stands out because it will use the main lens with the widest aperture. This will allow more light to be captured, even in dimly lit environmentss. Portrait mode shots in low light are more noticeable on the XR because it uses the wide-angle lens with a larger aperture.

Cheaper model fares better when placed to take pictures in dark environments

In a comparison, the same photo captured in iPhone XS looks like presents more noises (darker), while the photo taken with the XR appears to be brighter and sharper. The model more expensive comes to disappoint even having two lenses on the rear camera.

Winner in this category: model XR.

iPhone XR vs iPhone XS: Which has the best camera?

To decide which one is best, you need to choose a purpose for the phone. The iPhone XR camera will be able to deliver great images if 99.9% of them are captured in automatic mode. There are no significant differences in the quality of the captured content (image and video) between both smartphones and if you want, you can save R$ 2.100,00 if you only prioritize the camera.

But we can't deny that the iPhone XS has the best camera for taking pictures of kids and pets as we all know they don't like to pose. The most expensive model is also if you want to zoom in on photos and videos.

Too many tools

Other features that go beyond the camera are also important when choosing. The XS and XS Max have a nicer OLED screen, as well as having a smaller screen. The XS also has a stainless steel body and increased water resistance, while the XR has more color options available.

Whatever your choice, it will not be wrong; both models compared in this article have impressive cameras, and are capable of producing professional photos.
