This week, the Warner Bros. Games announced the cancellation of the game Wonder Woman and the closure of three studios, including Player First Games (MultiVersus), WB San Diego and the famous Monolith Studios. Monolith Productions closes
A Monolith Productions, founded in 1994, was one of the oldest studios in Warner Bros., known by titles such as FEAR e Middle-earth, a game set in the universe of Lord of the Rings, who introduced the revolutionary system Nemesis, allowing NPCs to develop dynamic relationships with the player. According to leaks, the game Wonder Woman, under development since 2021, faced technical difficulties in integrating with this system.
The closure of the game developer is a consequence of a major internal change in Warner Bros. Games to regain credibility and profitability. As reported by the website Bloomberg (via Kotaku) earlier this month, the reorganization came after recent title failures such as Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which would have resulted in a loss of US$200 million, and the lukewarm reception of Multi Versus, even after a year of inactivity for improvements.
In addition to Monolith, other Warner Bros. studios such as Player First Games (creator of Multi Versus) to WB Games San Diego (who was responsible for a AAA game free-to-play unannounced), were also closed. In an internal email released by the site Polygon, J.B. Perrette, boss of streaming and games of Warner Bros Discovery, says it is essential to “recover this credibility” to guarantee more investments in the gaming sector.
Warner Bros. Games' plans for the future
In a statement made to the website Kotaku, the company stated that the decision is part of a strategy to concentrate investments in the company's main franchises, such as Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC e Game of Thrones. According to Warner, the change “is not a reflection of these teams or the talent that makes them up,” but rather a necessary restructuring to ensure the production of “the best possible games.”
Rumors indicate that Warner Bros. Montreal is developing a game set in the universe of Game of Thrones, while the Rocksteady, famous for the trilogy Batman: Arkham, is reportedly working on a new Dark Knight game. Avalanche Software would be collaborating with the Warner Bros. Games in the production of a sequel to the successful RPG Hogwarts legacy.
What would a Wonder Woman game be like?
In addition to the announcement trailer in 2021 — which, according to the journalist Jason Schreier, Bloomberg, was the only material the company had — few details about the gameplay were revealed. The title promised an open world in Themyscira, the island of the Amazons, with the system Nemesis adapted and epic clashes.
Hours after the announcement of the studio's closure, the author Gail Simone, who has worked as a screenwriter on titles from DCas the Birds of prey e Wonder Woman, and acted as a consultant for the new game, spoke about the development of the title:
“The game was beautiful and vast. It was beautiful to look at. I won’t go into details for a variety of reasons, but every effort was made to make this not just a great game, but a great Wonder Woman game. An epic piece of work.”
And it was all thanks to the team. Everyone who worked on it brought their best. Programmers, artists, designers… everyone. I don’t know if I’ve ever worked with a team that cared more about making sure the final product was perfect. It was a dream come true.
Wonder Woman had a dream team and they put their all into it.”

Changes at Warner Bros.
It is worth remembering that the publisher is not the only division of the conglomerate that suffers from cuts and structural changes in the CEO's management. David Zaslav, who took over the company after the merger of the old Warner Media, previously purchased by the US telecommunications company AT&T, with the Discovery – resulting in Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD).
According to Variety, in 2024, WBD's layoffs exceeded a thousand employees and the cost-cutting policy has already reached large subsidiaries, such as Warner Bros. Pictures, film division, the pay TV channel HBO and streaming Max. Entire films that were in post-production, such as Batgirl, were canceled before release and successful series such as Westworld, were completely removed from services streaming.
However, at BlueSky, Schreier, from Bloomberg, questions the responsibility of the current CEO in the cuts in the gaming division, highlighting that the Monolith hadn't released a new game in at least five years before Zaslav took over the company.
How many of the games in the Monolith Have you played it yet? I was looking forward to it Wonder Woman finally have its own game? Tell us in the comments what you think of all this!
