LG Velvet launches with renewed design and 5G; check price and specifications

A LG made official today (06), in South Korea, the launch of Velvet, the smartphone that marks a new phase for the company in the mobile segment. According to the manufacturer, despite having an intermediate processor, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765, LG Velvet it has performance to spare, plus sophisticated cameras, design and display. In her own words, it is a “top of the line for the masses”.

Although it has only been made official now, the LG Velvet had already appeared in some previews released by the brand and came to leak completely in the specialized media. From the beginning, the point that most attracted attention in the model was its Design, which represents a new commitment by the Korean company in the mobile sector. If we remember that for years LG has been suffering losses with the low sales of its cell phones, the Velvet comes at a good time to embark on the wave of 5G.

Hardware

Confirming the flurry of leaks regarding the model, the LG Velvet will hit stores with the chip Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G, a very competent intermediary. Under the hood, the CPU features eight cores – two of them running at 2,4 and 2,2GHz, and six low-power cores, running at 1,8GHz, with 8GB of RAM.

on the screen, the LG Velvet features a P-OLED panel of 6,8 inches, Full HD+ resolution (2460×1080), HDR10 and 21:9 aspect – the same format with narrow sides and 'stretched' length of the Motorola One Vision and Sony Xperia most recent. Despite representing a drastic change in the design adopted by LG, the model also supports the LG Dual-Screen, the cover that adds a second screen to the cell phone and that we saw on LG G8X ThinQ, and a pen stylus, remembering that both will be sold separately.

With three rear lenses, the device features a main camera with 48 megapixels and opening f/1.8. As seen on other models, it uses every four sensor pixels as one and produces 12-megapixel images in standard mode. Called Pixel-Binning, this technology has appeared on several devices in 2020 and allows the sensor to capture more light, as each pixel starts to act as an quadruple their size, becoming much more sensitive to light.

Secondary cameras, in turn, are a Ultra-wide 8 megapixel, with aperture f/2.2 and up to 120º of angulation, and a 5 megapixel depth sensor, whose objective is only to improve the accuracy of the portrait mode on the main camera. The front camera has 16 megapixels, aperture f/1.9 and stays in a notch located at the top of the screen.

The other specifications of the LG Velvet prove that it does not intend to be a top of the line in the literal sense of the word, as it brings a good (but not surprising) battery of 4.300mAh, with support for chargers up to 30W (wired) and 10W (wireless); fingerprint reader under the screen; 128GB of internal memory; connectivity 4G e 5G (including mmWave and sub-6GHz); Android 10; microSD card support up to 2TB and certification IP68K against water and dust;

'Soft as velvet'

As we explained above, it is not new that LG faces losses in its mobile division, which makes Velvet a hope for the company. About the new name, for months LG was also being questioned if it intended to end the G line, which was confirmed after the company communicated to South Korean operators that their next flagships (from Velvet onwards) would have names focused on 'the design or special features' of the product.

Considering this information, it is very likely that 'Velvet' (or 'velvet', in Portuguese) is based on the design, since the device debuts the look that should appear in the next models of the brand, called 3D Arc. According to LG, the premise is that, looking at the device from the bottom, it appears to have a oval shape, similar to an ellipse.

Other design features that make the launch quite different from previous LGs is sharp curvature on the sides of the display, something that Samsung abandoned in the S20 and many other manufacturers adopted this year, in addition to the layout of the cameras, which in the model were made to look like drops falling on the back cover.

Whatever the reason for the name, however, it has to be agreed that 'Velvet' simply sounds better than 'G8X ThinQ'. In addition to being often compared to a algebra problem, the previous nomenclature made LG's lineup a bit confusing.

As for the special features presented by the model, several of them are intended for sound: in addition to keeping the headphone jack and offering stereo sound, the 'Voice Out of Focus' allows the microphone to isolate and remove background noise in a video recording, while the 'ASMR', as the name says, calibrates the microphone to capture whispers, ideal for recording videos of this genre.

Is that where the name came from, then? voice of 'Velvet'? Anyway, we'll never know.

Price and availability

Scheduled to hit South Korean stores in May 15, the LG Velvet will be launched in Aurora White (white), Aurora Green (Green), Aurora Gray (Grey) and in the launch color Illusion Sunset (pink-orange), more reflective than the others. There, the device will cost about US$ 730 (or R$ 4.172,00 in direct conversion). Considering the expression “top of the line for the masses” and the hardware of the device itself, it is difficult to know if the public will be convinced by the price.

Although the launch is only confirmed for the Asian market, the Velvet is an important model for LG and should arrive in more countries soon. The device was registered in the Anatel a few days ago and therefore your chances of reaching the Brazil are also big.
