Magic the Gathering has been, for more than 30 years, a great success in the world and responsible for the popularization of trading card games, the card games you buy and trade with friends to build your deck. It is turn-based, with beautiful engravings that represent characters, monsters, lands and other themes from the most diverse mythologies.

The transition to the digital world of the game had several stages. In the early 2000s, Magic Online was created (including receiving support to this day). In addition to it, several versions of the series were created. Duels of the Planeswalkers, who even went out to PS3 and Xbox 360.

However, with the success of Hearthstone, from Blizzard, Wizards of the Coast felt the weight of competition and saw that it was time to modernize its online version of the game. With that, in 2019, Magic: The Gathering Arena arrived, a free game, but also with the option to buy special cards and decks, which brings the beauty of physical cards and which has been enchanting fans of the franchise.

Take advantage of beginner decks

When you start your Magic Arena career, your deck options are extremely limited. You can only use a few starter cards, and trying to create a custom deck is very risky during competitive play.

For this reason, Magic Arena offers novice players the possibility of using pre-assembled decks with cards already optimized for the matches. The cards may not be strong, but they should help you get to grips with the competitive environment and reach higher ranks. Using these decks also rewards the player with special quests that are unique to starter cards.

Complete the Color Challenge!

As soon as you start playing Magic Arena, the experience will take you to a extensive tutorial, which will teach you how to use each of the cards available in the game, and how their color classes work. Also, as you continue the challenge, it will give you more decks or card kits that will help you advance in the experience.

In total there are about 30 tutorial games, which can be a little exhausting – but believe me, it's really worth it and it's fun, as the single-color decks released in the tutorial process are much better than the ones in double color, available by default when starting the game.

As 5 colors of Magic

As I mentioned the colors, I think it's fair to explain a little better about each one and what they mean. Each card color has a different philosophy or strand as its basis. For example:

  • White cards bring themes that represent peace, order, structure, altruism and equity.
  • Blue cards, have themes related to knowledge, deceit, caution, deliberation and perfection.
  • Black cards are based on power, self-interest, death, sacrifice and disinhibition.
  • Red cards represent freedom, emotion, action, impulse and destruction.
  • And finally, green cards bring themes related to nature, wildlife, connection, spirituality and tradition.

Daily quests are your friend

It is normal that in many openings of boost you end up getting a different card, with no effect, called wildcard. These cards, exclusive to Magic Arena, do not have a name or effect, and cannot be used in decks, but can be exchanged for other cards.

Wildcards come in different rarities, and work pretty much the same as “card voucher”, so it can be turned into something the player is looking for in their deck. To perform the exchange, just go to the list of cards in the game, click on the card you want and press the wildcard button.

study the meta

If you're really looking to invest the time to become a competitive Magic Arena player, then I need to stress the importance of understanding the current season's meta. The meta (short for metagame) is a term used by the community to highlight the main strategies used within the game scenario.

The meta is constantly changing, updated along with the new features that come with the game each season, so it requires a lot of attention from the player. A tactic that worked perfectly a few months ago may not work today, while new tactics can also be created every day.

weekly event

There is a special event called “Midweek Magic” that takes place every week, starting on Tuesday and ending on Thursday. This event is completely free for everyone, and can provide prizes (including rare cards) for the most dedicated players.

Taking part in this weekly event can be a little daunting if you're a beginner, but it's a great way to learn the ins and outs of competitive play and also delve deeper into professional Magic Arena mechanics.

losing is part

Losing is also part of the game in Magic Arena (Image: PC Gamer)

Our last tip is more psychological than anything from the game itself. Even with strong and related decks, you never know what your opponent will be able to use, so does not exist a magic formula to win in Magic Arena.

That said, you might get frustrated with losing, but don't give up! Losing in a competitive game like this is part of the journey. Take each of these moments as an opportunity to better understand what happens and avoid mistakes in future games.
