Amidst a scenario of intense curiosity and speculation, intriguing news emerges: Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, is involved in the construction of a mysterious bunker in Hawaii.
This project, shrouded in secrecy and surrounded by controversy, has generated a wave of questions and debates on the island. From the secrecy maintained by a team involved in the work to criticism from local experts and media theorists, Zuckerberg's undertaking to build this underground shelter also triggered a series of questions about privacy, impacts on the community and transformations in the local scene.
Reasons for construction

The truth is that no matter how many theories there are, there is still no concrete confirmation as to why Mark Zuckerberg wanting to have and build a bunker in Hawaii. The local journalist Allan Parachini highlighted the limitation in disseminating information about the project. He recounted his failed attempts since around 2017 to obtain permits and find out more about Zuckerberg's construction on Kauai, since even an article from The New Yorker, entitled “Preparing for the End of the World for the Super-Rich” was published.
In 2020, mid-pandemic, much was said about this investment by some billionaires in the idea of creating bunkers to escape the “end of the world”, still due to the context of the time. Their intentions were basically to seek protection against attacks from nuclear weapons and killer viruses. Because of this, it is not very strange to consider that the CEO of Meta You may have also thought the same.
Rumors soon began to circulate, with some people mentioning that they had heard that Zuckerberg was building an underground city. Others speculate that the property would be a post-apocalyptic bunker in the event of the collapse of civilization. Due to the size of the project, it appears to be more than a personal vacation home and, according to the magazine WIRED, the CEO has already organized two business events at the location.
Brandi Hoffine Barr, the businessman's spokesman, preferred not to comment on the project. However, she claims that, contrary to speculation, he, his wife Priscilla Chan and his children see what the construction of their new residence would be like.
It is worth highlighting that behind all this, there are some legal issues involving former owners of the land where the secret bunker and its entire complex are being built. According to local laws, the transfer of land to descendants can occur without formal documentation. This means that several descendants of the original owners have legal rights to small plots of land in the complex and can access them. It was precisely because of this that criticism soon reached the businessman.
Strategies were adopted to improve the image of Zuckerberg and his wife on the island, such as donating more than US$20 million (about R$98 million) to several local non-profit organizations. Furthermore, legal actions were also initiated to offer descendants the option of selling their shares of the land or putting it up for auction, in addition to meetings with the mayor of Kauai, Derek Kawakami.
Yet recently, in a newspaper article The Garden Island, Parachini criticized Mark Zuckerberg and asked island residents to express their dissatisfaction with the management of public beaches. Soon after, a representative of the CEO informed the journalist that the team would no longer cooperate with him on future reports.
Secret bunker details
According to information from the magazine WIRED, the property, known as Koolau Ranch, is located in an area of approximately 57 thousand square meters. It will include an underground shelter over 5.000 meters and will provide its own energy and food resources. Furthermore, the area is protected by a 1,80 meter high wall that blocks the view. Guards are always monitoring the entrance gate and patrol the neighboring beaches.
At least a dozen buildings are planned, each with at least 30 bedrooms and 30 bathrooms, along with two mansions with a total area equivalent to a professional football field. Furthermore, multiple elevators, offices, meeting rooms and industrial kitchens are integrated into the project.
A complete gym, swimming pools, sauna, hot tub, tennis court, houses for visitors and operational buildings are also part of the structure. Not enough, plans to build 11 treehouses in a nearby wooded area are also featured, as they will be connected by rope bridges.

Many of the doors throughout will be keypad controlled. Some, like those in a library, will be designed to blend into the surrounding walls. The door to the underground shelter will be built with metal and concrete for maximum security.
The two central mansions will be joined by a tunnel that extends towards the underground shelter, equipped with a living area and an emergency exit accessible by stairs. Cameras are also scattered throughout.
The bunker in Hawaii has its own water tank measuring 55 feet in diameter and 18 feet high, along with a pumping system. The 1.400-acre area produces various foods through livestock and agriculture.

Given the magnitude and proportion of the construction plans, it is a fact that it may raise questions about the changing landscape of the Hawaiian Island. Local residents, such as Jeff Lindner, mentioned the significant difference in terms of traffic and noise since then.
It is worth noting that the project did not go through public review processes, something often necessary for projects of this size.
Confidentiality agreement

So far, little information has been released about Zuckerberg and his wife's secret project, as all participants, from carpenters and electricians to painters and security guards, are under a strict confidentiality agreement. Those who violate the rules face immediate dismissal.
It's the fight club. We don't talk about fight club. Anything posted, they know about it immediately.
David, former contract employee
John, another former construction worker, also mentioned having heard reports about people being fired for only sharing photos on social media.
The value for a private residence of this magnitude is unprecedented in the local construction industry, as is the extreme level of secrecy and security involved. According to a local construction industry official, the only comparison that can be made is with secure military installations. For many of the workers, it is rare to find a private project with a confidentiality agreement of this nature.
But despite the amazement generated by this monumental project, it remains under intense scrutiny and criticism, especially directed at the project itself. Mark Zuckerberg. But while the mystery surrounding the complex persists, questions about the limits of privacy for such a prominent figure in such a large enterprise also persist. Douglas Rushkoff, a media theorist, was one of the first to give his opinion on:
If anyone has enough money to insulate themselves from the harm created to society, it would be Zuck. That's more or less it. He destroyed the government and society, and now he can go to Hawaii and build a fort.
Douglas Rushkoff, writer and media theorist
