The metaverse has been gaining more and more space and news over time. The concept of merging augmented reality and virtual environments promises to be the future of the internet, representing a true revolution, or rather, an evolution within the digital age. And thinking about it, the Meta (ex-Facebook), one of the companies that has been investing the most in the novelty, prepared an exclusive webinar for journalists this Tuesday (18).
On the occasion, journalists from all over Brazil were able to check out the basic concepts of the metaverse and had access to a little more of the company's vision on the next chapter of the internet. With a presentation by Caroline Dalmolin and Miro Lima, leaders of the Reality Lab Partnerships team at Meta in Latin America, the event also introduced the solutions developed by Meta into this new universe! Check out some of what happened below. No. webinar "Understanding the Metaverse: The Journey to the Next Chapter of the Internet.
the metaverse

Caroline and Miro started the event by explaining what the metaverse is. They tried, through real and practical examples, to demonstrate how the metaverse would work and could help improve and facilitate our daily lives. Merging augmented reality and virtual environments.
The metaverse can be understood as an experience in a virtual space, but with influences from real life. The idea is to be able to interact with the virtual world as if we were literally inside it. Instead of having to be in front of a computer or cell phone to connect, people in the metaverse will be able to use VR (Virtual Reality) and AR (Augmented Reality) devices to immerse themselves in all kinds of virtual environments — from concerts, to socializing with friends. and relatives, even work meetings.

The term metaverse was first seen in the science fiction book "Snow Crash", written by the American author Neal Stephenson, in the year 1992. In it, people use the metaverse to escape a dystopian reality. Asked where the idea came from, Stephenson explains that it all started when he was participating in an art project that used computer graphics. At the time, one of his questions was how this type of 3D technology would become popular. The answer, for him, was the development of some kind of mass product that would drive down the price of equipment, making it ubiquitous.
The full potential of the metaverse and its countless possibilities have been made possible thanks to the technological advances seen in recent decades, such as the 5G connection and components that, nowadays, are capable of providing a high processing capacity, creating increasingly faster and more innovative devices. . Both presenters even made a comparison with the evolution of technology during the XNUMXth and XNUMXth century, such as the telegraph, which later gave rise to the telephone, e-mail and, more recently, to social networks.
Going beyond Virtual Reality
Virtual and Augmented Realities still cause a lot of confusion in some people's minds. To quickly explain, augmented reality includes components that can interact with what already exists. Virtual reality, on the other hand, creates its own environment, totally new and independent of the real world.
A Meta, even brought some very interesting examples for the webinar. As you can see in the image above, on the left we have an image of the real world; in the center, an image with Augmented Reality, where some information, such as temperature and distance, overlap with reality; finally, Virtual Reality, a completely new world that has nothing to do with reality.
The metaverse can be applied and benefit several areas, such as education, health and even corporate. It is possible, for example, to follow space and its stars and planets more closely, through augmented/virtual reality glasses. Still in this sense, it is possible to join a gym class, even if you are at home or have access to 3D plans of an architectural project appearing right on your office desk.
Horizon Worlds and Horizon Workrooms
Finally, the Horizon worlds e HorizonWorkrooms were briefly introduced during the webinar. The presenters explained how the virtual worlds of Meta and what the benefits would be, in addition to some features present in the services.
O Horizon worlds (formerly called FacebookHorizon) is a kind of virtual reality social space where people can share the most varied activities with each other, including chatting, playing games and even building their own virtual worlds. Since last year, a trial version of Horizon worlds was made available to a limited number of users.
Already HorizonWorkrooms came to implement a common custom of companies before the COVID-19 pandemic, for the most part, which is to hold meetings with employees. In the home office, people started to use applications and internet resources to hold these meetings. Zuckerberg's idea is to bring proximity and more realistic 'contact' to the corporate environment that lives in social isolation.
With Oculus Quest 2, virtual reality glasses from Meta, newcomers can imitate socialization by creating avatars, which represent their figure at the meeting. The gestures and interaction between online models create the immersion desired by the company's CEO. It is also possible to chat and exchange experiences with other users, which is part of real-life experiences, according to Meta, and is hardly replicated in current technologies.
