Windows 10 Mobile starts rolling out to Windows Phone 8.1 devices starting today

After months of ads, previews, promises and atrasos, official update from Windows Phone 8.1 to the 10 Windows Mobile is (finally!) available from today.

The list of Lumia line devices enabled to receive Windows 10 Mobile was confirmed today by Microsoft. According to Windows 10 official page, the models that can migrate to Windows 10 Mobile are:

  • Lumia 1520
  • Lumia 930
  • Lumia 640
  • Lumia 640XL
  • Lumia 730
  • Lumia 735
  • Lumia 830
  • Lumia 532
  • Lumia 535
  • Lumia 540
  • Lumia 635 1GB
  • Lumia 636 1GB
  • Lumia 638 1GB
  • Lumia 430
  • Lumia 435
  • BLU WinHD w510u
  • BLU Win HD LTE x150q
  • MCJ Madosma Q501

To check if the update is available, download the app Upgrade Advisor (link) on your device. This application, provided by Microsoft, enables the device and releases the update as long as the model is eligible.

Then go to Settings > System Updates menu and tap the button to check for any updates. To start the process, which takes around 1 hour, it is necessary to have at least 40% battery.

Lumias purchased from carriers may have to wait a little longer, as these companies usually test their networks before releasing updates. If your Lumia isn't on the list, it's probably he won't get the update.

In addition to the usual visual overhaul, Windows 10 Mobile has several new features such as:

  • the new browser Microsoft Edge
  • New Outlook apps for email and calendar
  • New Word, Excel and PowerPoint apps
  • Notification Center enhanced with easy access to commands like Wi-Fi, Flashlight, Airplane Mode, etc.
  • Messaging app integrated with Skype or Whatsapp
  • New People, Photos, Maps, Xbox and Music apps (now called Groove Music)
  • Unified store for apps, games, music and movies

Another interesting feature, but invisible to the user, is the unified development platform support for the ecosystem or "Universal Windows Platform” (UWP, acronym for Universal Windows Platform).

A UWP allows developers to create applications that share the same source code – simply by designing the appropriate interface for each variant of the system (Windows 10, 10 Windows Mobile, Xbox One, HoloLens and others).

Microsoft hopes that the ability to develop a single app and distribute it across all these devices will attract new developers to Windows 10 and alleviate the system's main weakness: the anemic app store.
