The book that inspired the series Netflix, One hundred years of Solitude, was published in 1967 by the Colombian writer and journalist Gabriel García Márquez. Considered one of the most important works of Latin American literature and fantastic realism, it consolidated the career of García Márquez, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1982.

The story follows seven generations of the family Good day, co-founder of the fictional village of Macondo, where the plot unfolds. Throughout the book, the reader is immersed both in the characters' daily lives and in extraordinary situations that define the work as a milestone in Fantastic literature. Despite this, in a conversation with the Peruvian writer Mario Vargas Llosa, the author of the work reveals:

“I believe that, particularly in 'One Hundred Years of Solitude' I am a realist writer, because I believe that in Latin America everything is possible, everything is real.”

García Márquez, Also known as Garbo, reveals that the narrative of One hundred years of Solitude is inspired by the darkest and most miserable aspects of Latin American reality. What makes the work fantastic is the fact that, at many moments in the history of the continent, large-scale tragedies, such as a massacre that left around three thousand dead, end up being forgotten or relegated to oblivion.

In this context, the family characters Good day become a reflection of the Latin American population, which shares a common past and continues to face the historical adversities that shaped its trajectory.

The repetition of names among members of the Buendía family, such as Aurelianos e Jose Arcadios, throughout the generations, symbolizes this cyclicality of challenges and struggles. With around 20 Aurelianos and more than 12 José Arcádios over a period of 100 years, Garbo highlights the pattern of repetition in the lives of these characters, a metaphor for the persistent struggle of the Latin American people against the same difficulties that, inescapably, cross time.
