With an eye on the growth of streaming adoption in the face of the pandemic, the Netflix made some of its original productions free, with no plans to close this promotion. The catalog of material released varies according to the time and location of the user, but it is entirely composed of original productions - in other words, those that Netflix itself created.
The releases include series and movies, with some details: in the case of series, only the first episode is available to non-subscribers, while movies are completely free. In both cases, however, advertisements at the beginning and end of playback will be displayed, urging the user to purchase a subscription.
“Netflix is the go-to place for all your entertainment demands. But don’t believe us — see for yourself by watching some of your favorite movies and series, absolutely for free.”
Description on the official Netflix page

The current pandemic of the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) has had a positive effect on the acquisition of new users for Netflix: evidently, no one with the slightest bit of common sense would celebrate COVID-19 and its impact on the whole world, but thanks to the globalized isolation and quarantine policies, many people found themselves locked at home, which led to a surge in the volume of people watching streaming platforms: in the first quarter of 2020 (January to March), 16 million people opened an account on the platform, with another 10 million added by the end of the second quarter (April to June).
The numbers add up to a paid subscriber base of 193 million — an increase of 26 million users since the beginning of the year. For purposes of comparison: in 2019, the first six months saw Netflix acquire “only” 12 million users, with 28 million new subscriptions over the whole of last year.
And this comes at a good time: competing services like Amazon Prime Video are already in Brazil and bring good traction, while Disney+ and HBO Plus are about to land here. Other than that, there are still VOD offers (video on demand) of responsible companies with subscription channels, which further heat up the local market.
Netflix for free: how to activate the service
Netflix's free offerings are varied: new subscriptions usually have a trial period that has been from seven days to a month. In the case of this new feature, you don't even need to open an account, as no login is required.
Accessing the corresponding address (http://netflix.com/watch-free), you can now select which productions you want to watch. Just click “Play” and wait for the ads. For the user's convenience, by the way, the advertisements are made in the same way as YouTube, that is, after a few seconds, you can cancel them.
Currently, productions available for free include:
- Stranger Things
- Mystery in the Mediterranean
- Elite
- The Boss Baby: Back in Business
- birdbox
- eyes that condemn
- blind marriage
- Two Popes
- Our planet
- Grace and Frankie
Netflix points out, however, that while the free experience can be enjoyed through the browser on your desktop and your Android device (tablet or smartphone), it is not available for users of the iOS operating system, common to iPhones and iPads.
Further, it remains to be seen whether the streaming company's announcement refers to a temporary promotion or whether it will continue without being cancelled. We are inclined to believe in the second option as Netflix has not provided any closing date for the offer.
