Star Fox for Switch 2: N64 remake gets a release date and multiplayer.

The new Star Fox game for Nintendo Switch 2 will be based on the classic Star Fox 64, with updated visuals, multiplayer, and a June release.

A Nintendo announced unexpectedly during a Nintendo Direct on May 6, 2026, the return of Star Fox The first game in the franchise in a decade is coming to market. The title is simply called... Star Fox, arrives at Switch 2 em June 25th, 2026 and is described by the company as being based on the classic Star Fox 64, with redesigned characters and updated visuals. Back in March, the insider Nate the Hate I had already anticipated that a new Star Fox It was on its way to the Switch 2, with online multiplayer and a release still in 2026. as showmetech reported at the time.

What has changed since Star Fox 64?

The story follows the same starting point as the original: the scientist andross tries to dominate Lylat star system...and it's up to Fox McCloud and the Star Fox team to stop him. The player pilots their Arwing through the planets of the system, including the world of... cornering and the polluted oceans of Zones, in addition to the inner areas of a nebula.

The level layout remains the same as the 1997 original, but Nintendo has completely revamped the visuals. The characters have been given new designs with much more detail, and the... Slippy Toad, in particular, appears with a much more realistic look.

The game also includes cutscenes with fully voiced dialogue and an orchestral soundtrack, as well as briefings before each mission to provide more context to the story. In addition to spaceships, the title features other vehicles to pilot, including a submarine.

Game Modes

This new version of Star Fox It has three main modes. In Campaign modeIn this game, the player explores the planets of the Lylat system with difficulty options of Easy, Normal, and Expert.

The decisions made during the stages, such as completed objectives and defeated enemies, alter the available routes and missions accessed in each playthrough, encouraging multiple playthroughs.

Already Challenge mode It allows you to revisit previously completed stages with new objectives, some exclusive to this mode, on Normal and Expert difficulties.

Multiplayer and exclusive features of the Switch 2

Star Fox It also debuts with a dedicated multiplayer mode called Battle ModeThis is a new feature compared to Star Fox 64. In it, up to eight players share the role. Time Star Fox and Time Star Wolf in four-on-four matches.

The three maps in this mode have distinct objectives: zone control in cornering, collection of energy crystals in Fichina and cargo recovery from space pirates in Sector Y.

It's also worth noting that the game supports Switch 2 mouse control during the Campaign and Challenge mode, with direct switching between mouse and buttons. With a pair of JoyCon In a split formation, one player pilots the ball while the other takes on the role of striker.
