This Tuesday (26), the Federal Government starts issuing the new national identity card. This new version of the document was developed with the aim, according to the authority, of “simplifying the life of the citizen” and “to prevent fraud”. The new documentation will be issued first in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, with other states adhering to the model in the coming months.
What is the new RG
The new RG will have the CPF as its number, allowing it to be consulted through websites from its issuance and receipt by the bearer. Its legitimacy can be checked through a QR Code in the body of the document, which, when read, will authenticate the bearer's identity and the veracity of the paper number.
For comparison, the previous issuance of the document was done in such a way that, in case of loss of it or renewal in another state, the number was changed. The new document, however, will unify this, with the same number (the CPF) returned in both requests.
In addition, the new document can also be used as a travel document, as its standard conforms to international standards - with the presence of the MRZ code, Machine Readable Zone, even present in passports, although their presentation is still required for shipments and the like.
The following information appears in the new document:
- Arms of the Federative Republic of Brazil, the inscription “Federative Republic of Brazil” and the inscription “Federal Government”;
- Identification of the federative entity that issued it;
- Identification of the issuing agency;
- National general registration number;
- Name, parentage, sex, nationality, place and date of birth of the holder;
- Unique number of the holder's birth or marriage registration;
- 3×4 photo, according to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standard, the signature and fingerprint of the holder's right thumb;
- Signature of the director of the issuing agency;
- Expression “Valid throughout the national territory”;
- Expiration date, place and date of issuance of the document;
- Two-dimensional barcode in the QR Code standard;
- MRZ code, according to the standard established by the ICAO.

In addition, the issuance of the new document can only be done by those who have a regularized CPF. For this, it is possible to check the status of your document through the website of IRS, stating his number and date of birth.
If any pending issues are found, just fill out the form on this page of the Federal Revenue Service to start the regularization process,
Deadlines and previous validity, and how to issue the new document
The new RG will be issued by the Secretaries of Public Security of each state and DF, and the model must be adopted throughout the country by the maximum period of March 3, 2023. For the population up to 60 years old, the old model of the RG will still be valid for 10 years, while for the older population, it will be accepted and valid indefinitely.
The process of issuing the new RG will be carried out in person at the Public Security secretariats of each state, with the only document required to be presented being the birth or marriage certificate. The identification will be printed on security paper or polycarbonate card, in addition to digital format, available through the gov.br website.
Finally, we remind you that not every state will be issuing the new version of the document as of this Tuesday, but only Rio Grande do Sul. In the coming months, Acre, Distrito Federal, Goiás, Minas Gerais and Paraná will also adopt the model, while the remaining states have not yet released a forecast for carrying out the migration.
