Lost numbers are drawn in lottery in Brazil

Have you ever stopped to think that sometimes reality can imitate fiction in surprising ways? An example of this happened recently in a draw for Mega-Seine here in Brazil, when a very curious sequence of numbers was drawn, coincidentally, the same ones that marked several episodes of the series Lost. If you are a fan of the series, the numbers “4 - 8 - 15 - 16 - 23 - 42” may sound quite familiar, as they are the same characters that form an iconic sequence in the plot, which aired between 2004 and 2010.

Coincidentally, in the recent draw for contest 2720 of Mega-Seine, five of the numbers in this sequence were drawn, being “08 - 15 - 16 - 23 - 42 - 43”. However, the main prize was not taken home, but accumulated R$37 million for the next game that takes place this Tuesday (7th). A significant number of people were still lucky enough to match some of the numbers drawn, guaranteeing interesting prizes on the court and on the corner (bets with four and five hits, respectively).

Among the participants, 2.967 people managed to match five numbers, guaranteeing each one a prize of R$1.878,49. Meanwhile, an even larger group of 6.884 players were successful in matching four numbers, which earned each of them R$809,63. Still, it is difficult to determine how many winners were directly influenced by the sequence, as it is impossible to distinguish between those who exclusively chose this combination and those who included it among others.

It is worth mentioning that this is not the first time that the numbers of Lost appear in lottery draws. Since 2011, they have surprised players in the United States, both federal and state. The director himself and one of the creators of the series, Damon Lindeloff, says to continue playing with them.

The reference to the series Lost

For those who still don't understand exactly the buzz that took place on the internet due to the draw, the answer lies in the connection with one of the characters in the series: Hugo “Hurley” Reyes.

The numbers “4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42” play a crucial role throughout the episodes, but their story begins when we are introduced to Reyes winning a fortune by playing these numbers in the lottery. However, his luck turns to misfortune when a series of inexplicable tragedies begin to occur around him, including the death of his grandfather, fires and even imprisonment, which leads him to believe that they are cursed numbers. A search for answers takes him on a journey to Australia, where he then boards a flight that eventually crashes on a mysterious island, which begins the events of the series.

It is worth mentioning that, within the story, these six mysterious numbers can also be explained by the account of Valenzetti equation, which is a key concept in the mythology of Lost. It is presented as a mathematical equation created by the Italian Enzo Valenzetti, which supposedly would be able to predict the date on which humanity would become extinct due to factors such as overpopulation, war and scarcity of natural resources.

It seems that the series' influence continues to manifest itself in unexpected ways, even years after it ended, doesn't it?
