O DTS: X (Digital Theater System) is a sound system initially created for domestic environments, guaranteeing a cinema-quality sound experience. Then technology took over the movie theaters in fact.

This kind of sound technology surround is a rival to Dolby Atmos and several manufacturers provide support with their equipment. In fact, it is very likely that you have a device at home that uses DTS as a source of sound.

What is DTS:X?

DTS:X is an object-based audio system, which means that sounds have more fluidity and freedom, providing a great improvement in the sound experience. Created in 2015, DTS:X emerged as a good alternative to other audio codecs, mainly because it promises a more detailed, immersive and multidimensional atmosphere.

In this scenario, the surround system works in such a way that sounds can be positioned in different places within an environment. All of this is capable of promoting an immersive and wide soundscape for users.

Therefore, DTS:X is considered a more flexible technology, capable of adapting to different home theater systems. It is also capable of supporting up to 11.2 channels (other versions offer more possibilities) and 32 different speakers.

DTS:X Variations

DTS:X is the latest format of DTS, which can be found in two other versions. The first created was the DTS 5.1 version, which is more common and supports up to 5.1 channels, capable of providing a high quality experience.

The DTS-HD version can also be found, with higher standards than DTS. Differently, up to 7.1 channels are supported here, in addition to support for higher bitrates to encode audio, which guarantees higher quality than DTS, for example.

However, DTS:X also has some variations, which bring different innovations and attributes, capable of guaranteeing greater quality in the sound experience. Check it out below.

DTS:X PRO

DTS:X PRO is a version created in 2020 that stands out for having expanded the number of supported channels, going from 11.1 to 30.2. Even so, it is not necessary to occupy all channels with 32 speakers to have a great surround sound experience.

Among the new features, this version features the DTS Neural:X upmixer, a system that remaps policy, in order to enhance existing older content and enable it to work on extra channels that are available.

One caveat regarding this version is the limited number, for now, of devices compatible with the technology. Currently on the market you can find sound systems from manufacturers such as Denon and Marantz.

DTS Virtual: X

DTS Virtual:X is an audio processing technology capable of creating surround channels that can mix sound in a more immersive and effective way. Similar to DTS:X, DTS Virtual:X is designed for users with little space and who don't want to invest too much in sound.

The system works on any channel configuration (2.1, 3.1, 5.1, 7.1) and with the help of Virtual:X, it creates virtual surround channels that make the experience more special, giving soundtracks 3D quality, with sound sources coming from all sides.

How DTS delivers a cinema experience at home

Inside a movie theater, what makes the sound experience beneficial and engaging is the presence of a large number of speakers. Positioned within the environment, each device plays its role by acting on the determined sound frequency.

The sound standard created by DTS:X promises to be more immersive, making the indoor experience similar to movie theaters. This is because DTS:X works by enabling common audio devices to reproduce sound in 360°, giving the impression that it comes from several directions.

This way, when the user watches the film with the audio connected to several different channels, the available frequencies make it feel like they are actually inside the film.

In this aspect, what differentiates DTS:X from its rival is the non-obligation of high investments in various equipment that can guarantee the experience in its entirety. Unlike Dolby Atmos, it is possible to explore good sound quality without the need for home theaters and ssoundbars.

DTS x Dolby Atmos

Both DTS:X and Dolby Atmos are technologies that allow users to feel like they are hearing sounds from different directions. However, Dolby Atmos technology requires at least seven speakers from equipment compatible with the surround system. On the other hand, DTS:X does not operate with the need for compatible equipment with the audio system.

In relation to Dolby Atmos, DTS:X works with up to 11.1 channels, supporting 32 different speakers. Furthermore, the bitrate, or amount of data needed to form sounds, is greater than that presented by Dolby Atmos. In other words, this particularity makes DTS:X have better sound quality.

Another feature that differentiates DTS:X from Dolby Atmos is its ability to granularize channels. Some Blu-rays offer a feature to ease the experience for users who have difficulty hearing the sound in a particular scene. This way, with DTS:X it is possible to select the audio from the specific moment in the film that you want to hear more clearly.

Home Theaters and Soundbars with DTS:X

The sound standard provided by DTS:X does not require the device to be used to be solely compatible with the technology. In fact, what DTS:X requires is that the device has support available that guarantees the reproduction of this sound pattern.

There are some devices available on the market that can work for different types of profiles of people who want to enhance the sound, increasing the pleasure of the sound experience. Check it out below!
