OneDrive stops offering unlimited space and reduces free plan

O OneDrive had an aggressive strategy for its plans to cloud storage. The free plans included 15GB of space, and by activating automatic photo uploads on the smartphone, the user could double the space. There was also an offer unlimited storage for subscribers to the Office 365.

The strategy does not seem to have done well for the infrastructure da ecosystem. On a announcement made yesterday (3.11), the company reported that will no longer offer unlimited space e will reduce space of the free plans.

Subscribers will have a maximum 1 TB of storage. Anyone who exceeds this limit will have 12 months to delete files surplus – otherwise, the data may be deleted by the company. In the free option, everyone will have their storage cut to 5 GB in early 2016. The 15GB bonus of automatic photo backup will also be canceled.

According to ecosystem, the change was necessary because a few users were “abusing” unlimited space, making extreme backups, which reached 75 TB. The company says it wants to focus on “High-value productivity and collaboration experiences that benefit the majority of OneDrive users.”

The paid plan options of 100GB or 200GB of additional space will no longer exist. The option available now are 50GB for $1,99 monthly.

Subscribers to the Office 365 who feel that the service no longer meets their demands may ask for a “proportionate refund”. Users who have free accounts and use more than 5GB will get a 1-year subscription to 365 Office Staff as a courtesy. The details are explained on this page.
