Brazil already has a representative for the Oscar 2023. The film mars one of the miner gabriel martins will seek a spot among the nominees of the next edition of the event.
The information was revealed this past Monday morning (5) by the Brazilian Academy of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts. This selection took place after a pre-list of competitors previously published. In the running were the long ones: The mother, Peter's Journey, coal, Pacified e Paloma.
mars one will now seek a spot among the nominees for Best International Film. Titles chosen by countries around the world will enter the competition. The nominations for the 2023 Oscars, which take place on March 12 next year, will be revealed on January 24. A pre-list of some categories, including the one mentioned above, is always revealed a few months in advance.

A Selection Committee of the representative film this year had 19 members. They are: André Pellenz, Bárbara Cariry (president), Cavi Borges, David França Mendes, Eduardo Ades, Guilherme Fiúza Zenha, Jeferson De, João Daniel Tikhomiroff, João Federici, José Geraldo Couto, Juliana Sakae, Marcelo Serrado, Maria Ceiça de Paula , Patricia Pillar, Petra Costa, Renata Almeida, Talize Sayegh, Waldemar Dalenogare Neto and Zelito Viana.
“The choice of “Mars One” to represent Brazil at the 2023 Oscars was a democratic and important decision by the jury. The film is about affection and hope, about the possibility of continuing to dream in the midst of so many economic and political difficulties. “Mars Um” sums up Brazilian cinema well, with narrative and technical quality, which is being produced today, representing the diversity of the country”, says Bárbara Cariry, president of the commission, in a note from the ABCAA.
The film has been showing in Brazilian cinemas since August 25th.
Mars One Synopsis and Trailer
Acclaimed and with tears from the public at Gramado Festival, the film tells the story of a poor black boy from the countryside of Minas Gerais. The story takes place in the last months of 2018, right after the presidential elections that elected Jair Bolsonaro. O young Deivid (Cicero Lucas), youngest of Martins family, dreams of being an astrophysicist, and participating in a mission that in 2030 will colonize Mars.
He, however, lives on the outskirts of a large urban center and does not receive many chances from society to do so. Still, he never gives up. Hours and hours pass as he watches videos and lectures on astronomy on the internet.
The boy's family also brings strong emotions to the plot. The father, Wellington (Carlos Francisco), is the doorman of an elite building. He hasn't had a drink for a long time and attends AA sessions to stay that way. tertia (Rejane Faria) is the mother who, after an incident related to a television prank, believes she is cursed. The eldest daughter of the couple, Eunice (Camilla Damião), intends to move into an apartment with his girlfriend (Ana Hilário), but he doesn't have the courage to tell his parents.
History of Brazil at the Oscars
In the previous edition of the Academy, Brazil was represented by the film private desert. Aly Muritiba's work was not among those nominated for Best International Film. The category was won by drive my car, a Japanese feature, which was also nominated for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay.
Throughout history, the country has already had some representatives among the five finalists, and even nominated for other categories. However, none of them won any awards. The biggest highlight is City of God, the only Brazilian film to date to compete for Best movie, in 2004, and also the highest nominee. He also received nominations for Best Director (Fernando Meirelles), Adapted Screenplay, Best Editing and Best Cinematography.

Some Brazilian co-productions with other countries were also indicated, with highlights:
- Black Orpheus (with France): won Best International Film
- Spider-Woman's Kiss (with USA): nominated for four categories, including Best Picture
- Central do Brasil (with France): Best International Film and Best Actress (Fernanda Montenegro, the only Brazilian actress to compete to date)
- Call Me By Your Name (with USA, France and Italy): won Best Adapted Screenplay, and competed for three others, including Best Picture
