La Casa de Papel Korea, Everything Everywhere All At Once and other multiverses – ShowmeCAST #97

Leticia's Avatar
The peculiarities of the Korean adaptation of La Casa de Papel and the “movie of the moment” in the slang of young people, in addition to the recommendation of games and anime. The ShowmeCAST of the week is on!

In the episode that marks the ninety-seventh edition of our ShowmeCAST, I – the presenter who speaks to you, Leticia - and the dear Arthur Pieri we brought some indications for those who are in the continuous search for good games, movies, series, books, comics and everything else.

ShowmeCAST 97 starts with La Casa de Papel Korea

We started the conversation with La Casa de Papel Korea, a Korean adaptation of the original series from Spain, which occupies the top positions among one of the largest audiences in Netflix. In fact, it became the most watched series on the platform in 92 countries, losing its position recently to Round 6.

On the 28th of June, the korean remake arrived on the platform to exceed the expectations of fans who demand content in the same formula and to displease those who expected more originality. The premise is the same: criminals with codenames of capitals from all over the world come together to carry out the biggest robbery ever carried out, under the command of the so-called "teacher", only this time, on the Korean Peninsula. The socio-political scenario is also quite different and entirely fictional – North and South Korea are undergoing economic reunification.

Tutu points out the similarities and differences between the two works, stressing that it is an interesting indication for those who have never seen the original title. For those who loved the six seasons of the Spanish series, it's almost a must, as it's an opportunity to revisit your favorite characters in a new way. Some mannerisms, like the silly, exaggerated laugh of Denver, are legal elements to identify in the characterization of the members of the gang of thieves.

And if you watched round 6, you will find a familiar face: Park Hae Soo, one of the protagonists of the series, is the Berlin from this version of La Casa de Papel. The first season arrived with six episodes and there has already been confirmation for the second, scheduled for release in the last quarter of 2022.

There are no reviews for What Remains of Edith Finch.

Among the experiences I've had in the last week, the quick three hours I explored the Finch house was one of my favorites. On the recommendation of many, including Tutu, I decided to play What Remains of Edith Finch. We talk a little about how the funereal theme of the work is dissected in a light and fun way, even in the midst of tragedies, which happen due to an alleged curse of the Finch family.

Alongside the impeccable artistic direction that creates unique environments and somewhat bizarre stories for each member of the family tree, there are also absurd mechanics that, more than immersiveness, I would say absorbed me at certain moments.

We highlight the tale of Edith's brother, Lewis, who worked in a canned sardine factory, performing a mechanical task. In other words, he incorporates failure into society, since he was not “successful”. As he wandered through his thoughts, he lived in a “parallel reality”, a peripheral world, where he was a prince, dreaming of another life while cutting fish in a dark room with repetitive movements. This process is controlled by the right analog stick, while the left analog stick takes care of a simple puzzle that represents Lewis' imagination and that, little by little, takes over reality. Anyway, creative and beautiful in a strange way, you have to play to find out!

Everything Everywhere All At Once and the wave of the multiverse

Jamie Lee Curtis and Michelle Yeoh Deliver Amazing Performances

We move on to the movie more "hyped“of the present: Everything Everywhere All At Once, directed by Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (known as the “Daniels”), stars Michelle Yeoh, Stephanie Hsu, Ke Huy Quan, Jenny Slate, Harry Shum Jr., James Hong and Jamie Lee Curtis. Seen in full in a movie theater, the feature is highly recommended by Tutu. He highlights the performances and history that, as well as several works of the moment, are developed in such multiverses, those scenarios that are born from the possibilities and alternative paths that are presented to us throughout life. Meanwhile, I, who slept halfway through the film because of fatigue, am even more anxious to continue.

Kaisen Jujutsu for otakus

In this episode there is also otakice! I finished Kaisen Jujutsu, anime produced by MAPPA, based on the homonymous manga written and illustrated by Gege Akutami. Suffering, regret, shame: the negative feelings of humans become Curses, which cause accidents and deaths in the places they are born. To combat such curses, there is a class of sorcerers who are trained in Higher Technical Schools of jujutsu (spells).

Yuji Itadori, a high school student, deserves honorable mention just for not being an asshole protagonist (Naruto, I love you, but I'm looking at you). his companions, Megumi Sushiguro and Nobara Kugisaki, are also excellent characters with dynamics that don't rely on romance. The teacher Satoru Gojō and all the students, as they appear and have developed mini arcs, guarantee all the good humor and depth of the plot.

Finally, we bring you some game tips that have been following us this past week. Listen to ShowmeCAST to update your list!
