New Mercosur standard plate will feature a security chip and QR code

The idea of standardizing the license plates of Brazil with those of the rest of the Mercosul has been postponed since 2016. However, according to a resolution published this Thursday (8) by the National Traffic Council, counter, the cars sold in Brazil from 1st september this year will already have the new plates.

security focus

In addition to a standardized layout with other Mercosur countries, the plates to be adopted in Brazil will have novelties to prevent the practice of cloning: with the adoption of a chip and a unit’s QR code on each plate, both containing vehicle and driver information, the federal government hopes to make it easier to identify this type of crime.

As with the European Union's standardized plates, a single model of plate for the entire Mercosur can facilitate inspection of vehicles stolen or used as instruments for other crimes.

Another new feature of the plates is an identification system different from that currently used in Brazil. Around here, vehicle license plates are made up of three letters and four numbers. In the new standard, however, the only rule is that the last character must be a number, so as not to disturb cities that adopt the rotation scheme. ()

Changes in look

In all, there are nine identification and security items

Changes to the look of the signs are also aimed at making cheats more difficult. Altogether, they are nine security elements, including watermarks, prints, flags and even a holographic strip, just like those on R$50 and R$100 bills.

In private vehicles, the plate will have a white background and black inscriptions. In commercial cars, such as taxis, the white and red standard is still valid. According to the resolution published by the counter, the dimensions of the new boards will also be the same as those used today. Ie, 40 x 13 cm for cars and 20 x 17 cm for motorcycles.

Is it for real this time?

Despite countries like Argentina and Uruguay already using the new plates, Brazil has been postponing the implementation of the new layout since 2016. When asked about the reason for the delays involving the move, the National Traffic Department, the denatran, claimed that the new standard requires a database integrating all Mercosur members.

If the idea really goes ahead this time, all vehicles licensed from September 1st will have to bring the new standard. In addition, for models manufactured before this date, the deadline to exchange the old plate for the new one is up to December 2023.

Even with so much technology in the new cards, the cost of switching is expected to remain the same. In between R$120 e R$200, depending on each municipality.
