This tried to be stopped in 2019, but ended up being authorized by the São Paulo City Hall and the owner. This is the image of the site before demolition:

What was the tallest building in São Paulo before that?

Until the construction of Platinum 220 was completed, the title was Condominium Mirante do Vale, which is 170 meters high. The site was designed by the architect Waldomiro Zarzur, its construction began in 1960 and it was opened in 1966.

  3. Figueira Altos do Tatuapé – 168 meters.

Currently, the tallest building in Brazil is also in Santa Catarina: infinity coast It has 234,7 meters and 66 floors. This is one of the tallest buildings in Latin America and construction took place between 2013 and 2019.

Remember was not focus

Aline Meira, architect and urban planner and coordinator of Urban Science at Porte Engineering and Urbanism, points out that the construction was not focused on breaking a new record. The idea was to take advantage of the height so that the area of a second 25-story tower could be used for other purposes.

O Figueira Altos do Tatuape, built in the same neighborhood and builder of the Platinum 220, had the same concept: the professionals responsible bet on verticalization so that sidewalks and green areas could be built in the place that would be a second tower. This photo of the completion of the works went viral on the internet:

Under current law, the works of the figueiras it couldn't even happen: in September 2013, the works were approved by the São Paulo City Hall. In June 2014, the Master plan has been sanctioned and new buildings within neighborhoods cannot be more than eight stories high. As the approval came earlier, the works proceeded normally.
