June is the month of festa junina, synonymous with lots of dancing, good food, colors and endless excitement throughout Brazil. In this article we tell you a little about how this important national cultural event came about, what the most famous festivals are and what you need to know to take part in this celebration.

Source

Before June parties Although they were a great popular event, they had another meaning: they were created by peasants from Europe No. XV century, in celebration of the arrival of Summer Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere, which marks the beginning of this season. The celebration, which marked the time favorable for planting, was also a way to ward off evil spirits or any pest that might impact the plantation.

This explains the characterization with rural elements in the June festivals, such as straw hats (clothing worn by peasants who faced the sun during planting), the patches on clothes (which were worn out in the field) and the fateful moustache in men.

O Christian bias was introduced from the consolidation of Christianity in Europe, between the 15th and 16th centuries. The Church commonly incorporated major, hitherto pagan festivals into the Catholic calendar, adding Christian elements. According to historians, this was intended to facilitate the religious conversion of people. Therefore, the June festival coincided with the celebrations of three great saints of Catholicism: St. Anthony (June 13nd) St. John (June 24) and São Pedro (June 29th).

Flames and smoke fill the landscape of an erupting volcano, a dark night, nature in environmental disaster.

As Brazil became diverse through immigration and expeditions, our festa junina received a cultural mix. While the indigenous culture added more rural elements, such as the tradition of jumping over the bonfire and typical foods, the African culture added the drum, the dances and the music in general. There is still the Portuguese heritage, not only coming from the religiosity brought by Christianity, but also through the use of plaid shirt, a very popular and fashionable piece at the time.

No Brazil, festa junina has arrived through the Portuguese in colonization, during the century XVI. During this period, June festivals were already popular in the Iberian Peninsula (Portugal and Spain), and were no longer restricted to peasants. Having already arrived with a Catholic bias, the Church itself held several masses and processions during the Brazilian June festivities.
