As a Californian company with little activity in Brazil, Plantronics is not as well known around here, nor does it have a strong representation. But the company's current actions show that it intends to change that reality and is striving to do so.

A Plantronics has a product line aimed at the gamer audience, and we at Showmetech received the Gamer RIG headset for testing. He stayed in our HQ for just over a month, enough time to test his full capabilities.

Taking it out of the (beautiful) box

The first impression when picking up the box from the RIG could not be better. By being treated as a product "premium“, he has a wonderful presentation. Its box is beautiful and full of details, like a velcro on the front, which allows you to see the phone without opening it.

Another positive point for RIG was the amount of accessories that come with it. Altogether they are: the mix (we'll talk about it later), a cable with microphone to be used on the PC, another to be used on smartphones, also with a microphone, but more discreet, a specific cable to connect it to the Xbox and a RCA cable to use it on other consoles.

Because it has so many accessories, at first it seems complicated to install the headset with the mixer and use it. But, inside the box, the company included a well-illustrated manual, which helps in setting up the device.

And, it is worth noting that it is all “plug-and-play”. That is, when connecting it to the PC, the mixer automatically starts to control the sound volume and the microphone works perfectly. He is even recognized by the Skype or Whatsapp, which suggests leaving it as the default for calls.

Design and finishing

O RIG is an headset very beautiful, that is undeniable. I personally didn't like it very much. Headsets because they are almost all ugly and gigantic, giving the impression of an airplane pilot or football narrator.

With RIG, is already different, despite being big as all headset, it is so beautiful, it makes you enjoy wearing it. Not to mention that he is very comfortable.

The model is all padded and covered in fabric. So then it won't crumble over time or tear the sponge like other headphones do. This finish provides exceptional comfort, allowing you to wear it all day long, without worrying.

the phone it's all made of plastic and its adjustable head strap has a fun indicator for adjustment. Although beautiful, its all plastic construction made me worried. Her headphones are articulated and joined to the tiara, which can at some point break with greater effort.

Audio quality

"Will I blow my brains out if I turn your volume all the way up?” probably not, but the sound power of this phone is absurd! Its 40 mm drivers (the phone's small speakers) emerge in a epic sound experience. The bass is absurdly strong and the other frequencies can also be well perceived. Not to mention the sound insulation, which is satisfactory.

He brings 3 EQ modes which can be triggered directly in the mixer: pure, intense e seismic. O pure mode is more balanced, while the intense intensifies the mid frequencies and the seismic brings the bass into your ear with great force.

Despite being made of flexible plastic, the microphone boom doesn't allow you to adjust it to bring it closer or farther away from your mouth, but I must say that it doesn't need that. If you want, you can remove the microphone cable and switch to the smartphone cable, which also works on the PC and is more discreet.

Speaking of PC microphone: It picks up the voice very well, even whispers or the voice of someone close to you. The sound is very clean and crisp, a positive point, as it can be used to record voice for videos of gameplay with quality and will not disappoint.

And what about the Mixer? What is it?

Here's the big balcony RIG, which differentiates it from competitors and makes it much more attractive: the mix. It is a device that allows you to balance the volume of your PC with that of your cell phone, or your console with your smartphone, to listen to both at the same time, or to switch between them using the same handset.

Let's say you are in an online game of Battlefield and the phone rings, it's your mother! And now? Online game doesn't pause and mother doesn't ignore herself. This is where the mixer comes into play.

Once configured, with just one touch of the answer call button, you answer and end the call and can go back to the sound of the game. Need I say this is wonderful?

What if you want to listen to music on your PC and watch a video on your mobile? Can you all at the same time?! Yes, it is possible. The only problem is the learning curve you have to learn how to use the mixer, but I already mentioned that there is a well illustrated manual in the box, right?

So, is it worth it?

After our tests I would say yes it is worth it! If you just want a good headphone to listen to music, there are other options on the market that are much cheaper. But remember that the RIG it's not just a headset, is a tool to help increase productivity or your comfort when having fun.

If you are a person who plays a lot, likes to record videos and is looking for a headset with good recording quality, or if you divide your attention a lot between your computer and cell phone, answering calls and listening to music, this headset and to you. After all, there's nothing more boring than pausing your music to answer a call, it's much more interesting when you can leave your music in the background while talking to someone.

It is worth emphasizing that the phone is very comfortable, has durable materials (except its plastic body), is all covered in fabric, has excellent sound quality and voice capture and is very beautiful, drawing attention wherever it goes.
