After a controversial launch, Cyberpunk 2077 arrives with everything on Nintendo's new hybrid console, delivering great performance and lots of action

After releasing the epic action-adventure RPG The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt In 2015, the gaming world had high expectations for the Polish developer's new venture CD Project Red, Cyberpunk 2077. However, despite many promises and many delays, what reached players' hands at the end of 2020 was a game full of bugs, technical flaws and performance issues that made it almost unplayable.

Fortunately, the company redeemed its mistakes with the necessary corrections and updates and, 4 years after its launch, Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition arrives on the new console Nintendo, Nintendo Switch 2, delivering an immersive, quality and action-packed experience like never before.

History

The narrative continues to be one of the game's highlights. You control V, a mercenary, nomad or corpe (depending on the type of character you choose to play) in search of fame and survival in the futuristic streets of Night City, while dealing with the digital “ghost” of Johnny Silverhand (Keanu Reeves).

The expansion phantom liberty adds a political espionage arc involving an international conspiracy and new notable characters, such as Solomon Reed (Idris Elba). All of this makes the story captivating from start to finish, even for those who have played on other platforms.

Free from the bugs that plagued players in the first few months since the game's initial release, Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition brings the complete package of narrative and combat experiences that were the initial goals of its development team. With the addition of the DLC pack, V’s story has seven different and unique endings, which are revealed to the player based on the choices made throughout the story. Will you be a mercenary wreaking havoc in Night City, or perhaps a renegade corps that will participate in power games to get where you want to go?

Gameplay

A curious and extremely welcome addition is the official support for mouse gameplay using the Joy-Cons 2. Nintendo has implemented optical sensors into the new controllers, allowing them to be used as an “air mouse” for menu navigation and even aiming in-game. It works better than expected, especially in ranged combat, offering precision that approaches that of a real mouse, but still with that slight improvised feeling.

The game also supports the traditional analog control scheme and, of course, full button customization, including saved profiles for different play styles. The only case in which we do not recommend using the new Joy-Cons 2 as a mouse is when controlling vehicles, because even adjusting the sensitivity level, the movement is very imprecise and controlling with the analogs provides a much more comfortable experience.

Graphics, performance and bugs

The biggest surprise of this version is, without a doubt, the technical performance. Thanks to the Switch 2's more robust hardware and the AI upscaling technology implemented by CD Projekt RED, Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition wheel the 720p in portable mode e 1080p in docked mode with frame rate varying between 30 and 40 fps. While in docked mode the resolution is fixed, it varies between 720p in performance mode with up to 40 fps, and 1080p in quality mode with a maximum of 30 fps, both modes available only in portable mode. Although this rate is lower than the 60fps available in PS5, Xbox Series X e Desktops more powerful, the compromise is well balanced for the hybrid format.

The use of DLSS 4 ported to Switch 2's NVIDIA chip allows for sharper textures and improved lighting compared to what we saw on the first Switch. In very dense areas like Japantown or Watson, there may be occasional small drops in performance, but nothing that compromises the overall experience.

During the more than 30 hours of gameplay carried out for this analysis, only one bug caused the game to crash and restart, but we believe this was a one-off failure that did not repeat itself. Furthermore, it is clear that in docked mode the game demands more from the console, with a greater amount of hot air being released from the top of the Nintendo Switch 2, but nothing that caused overheating or even noise.

In portable mode, even though it consumes more battery from the console, there was no excessive heating of the device. Given these considerations, it is safe to say that Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition is a solid graphical experience from start to finish on the Nintendo Switch 2.

Conclusion

Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition on the Nintendo Switch 2 is an impressive technical feat, balancing graphical quality, stability and portability. For those who have never played or want to revisit Night City in a more casual way, this version delivers more than expected, especially due to the convenience of portable mode. Although this version does not reach the technical level of those found on high-end platforms, the fact that we have this narrative and graphical scope in the palm of our hands is something worthy of note.
