REVIEW: Galaxy Z Flip4 5G attracts more for beauty than innovation

When Samsung first announced a foldable cell phone, the news reverberated in immense proportions. After all, who would have thought that the human being would make such engineering – until then very fanciful – work and carry everything that a premium smartphone could offer?

Years later, the South Korean company launches the fourth generation of this prototype that, for some, has become common or at least better known by consumers. O Galaxy Z Flip4 5G arrives on the Brazilian market one year after the launch of Galaxy Z Flip3 5G with some promises kept, but no step beyond the standard that Samsung itself has set itself.

Design

If the Galaxy Z Flip3 5G already won the consumer for the design, the Galaxy Z Flip4 5G will likely take his post without difficulty. That's because the new generation of the smartphone had its design — minimally changed — improved, which made it even more pleasing to the eye than its predecessor.

Starting with the appearance: the promotion of the cell phone is being done with the base color violet, one of the most beautiful tones in a smartphone. Although the Z Flip3 brings this tone in its palette, it was much more common for Brazilians to find it in advertising materials or even in stores in the cream version, which is less unique, like the black tone.

By introducing new colors, Samsung reaffirms the Z Flip4 as a sports device that adapts not only to your needs, but also to your style preferences. The 2022 release is available in shades violet, azul, rosé e black. We got the violet pattern and it really is a visual treat even before opening the smartphone.

In addition to the color, the phone has reduced edges and thinner hinges, which is a very welcome evolution. When you hold it, the feeling is that this is the most refined model of the line so far. Its aesthetic managed to marry lightness with a compact appearance in the most fluid way possible.

The Galaxy Z Flip4 5G box comes with the same items that are well known in other modern models: device, user manual and charging cable. The consumer's defeat regarding the absence of the energy source unfortunately continues.

The traditional 6,7 inches of the previous model continue in the new one, which also has 2X Dynamic AMOLED and IPX8 certification against water and dust. In the Galaxy Z Flip4 5G, the user finds what he expects. Vibrant, colorful and intense images come to life on the device, especially in videos and games. A simple Subway Surf becomes a show on screen.

The other screen is also useful. Positioned on the back of the cell phone, next to the camera lenses, the 1,9 inch accommodates widgets, notifications and you can even reply to messages and phone calls without having to open the device. Some other services may be amplified by the Samsung SmartThings, but the one that is built-in from the factory works normally and quickly.

Speaking of speed, the processor Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 allows this cell phone to be fast in all its functions. Browsing, opening multiple applications, running a game: it's all made easy and we haven't seen any issues with it. The only caveat worth mentioning is the issue of the temperature of the device.

There is a history already known by Samsung users regarding smartphone overheating in heavy tasks. Here, the Z Flip4 started to heat up after a while of action in a tested mobile game, Brawl Stars. This is not a game very light because it depends on some resources, including online, to work, but the point is that it is also not heavier than a Wild rift, for example. The heating is not very strong, but it still exists. Perhaps the system still needs more optimization.

Cameras

The Galaxy Z Flip4 5G comes with a set of two rear cameras and one front camera. The latter is an internal camera, positioned below the display glass, of 10MP. Pointed out to be lacking in the Z Flip3, it returns a little better. The photos recorded are cleaner and sharper, but obviously they don't match the beautiful rear lenses, both with 12MP, which give a show in capture.

The sensor of the rear cameras is more agile, takes photos faster and manages to record them magnificently. In addition, the footage is also great and gives scope for the user's creativity, as the device adapts according to its opening (it is possible to record with the cell phone “sitting”, for example).

Another very useful feature is the use of the rear camera for excellent selfies. With the smartphone closed, the user can take advantage of the very high quality of the rear lenses to produce the best possible front content. This even replaces at times the need to open the front camera itself to use it. It's a smart, well-integrated and highly responsive scheme.

Stereo sound is yet another positive feature in this handset. Its functionality is fluid and does not depend on other settings to work correctly. Without headphones, it is possible to hear the audio with clarity, power and good discernment between treble and bass.

The battery — a controversial topic for Samsung, especially for this line of smartphones — is something the company wanted to fix in the face of criticism of the predecessor model. With 3.700 mAh, in fact, the Z Flip4 wins in longevity. In considerably moderate use, it is possible to go all day without plugging it in. With more intensive use, the user will possibly need to charge it when it reaches between 13 and 16 active hours.

But it is also worth mentioning that, in the near future, the ideal would be for the company to be able to extend this daily validity even further. After all, this is one of the most expensive premium models on the market. It is necessary to match the cost-benefit.

Available throughout Brazil through Samsung and partner stores, the price of Galaxy Z Flip4 5G may vary depending on the establishment chosen, as well as the presence of in-person or online promotions.

After praising most of the device's performance, it must be pointed out that, in the end, this is not a launch that is so far from its predecessor. With an average difference of BRL 1.250 — given the 3GB Z Flip4 and Z Flip256 at Samsung's official store — the switch to the next-gen model doesn't sound very inviting. Anyone who has the purchasing power to take a Z Flip4 home will not find a totally innovative version. The innovation of yesteryear has become the 'cute' commonplace of now.
