O LG Ultrafine Display Monitor The 27" monitor is an interesting choice from the brand. It's available at a relatively affordable price and could be the ideal partner for those who work with image and video editing. Check out our full review now and see if this monitor is worth investing in!
Design
O lg ultrafine display is a 4K monitor from LG Perfect for those who want to work with beautiful images. Its construction is all plastic, but that doesn't make it any less appealing, as it's sturdy and well-built, and it also features a white finish on the back and stand.
About the monitor stand, it comes divided into two parts in the box: Support Body e Support Base. Assembly is super simple, we just need to connect the the body to the monitor and the base. Then, simply insert the included screws in the indicated locations to secure everything. The process takes no more than five minutes.
On the front, the monitor features a virtually bezel-less design. This is a very pleasing choice and makes it a beautiful addition to any setup. The rear displays its connections, which are easy to access and manage.
In the place where we were able to test it, the table is 1,20M wide, but shares the space with a PS5 and another laptop. The monitor fit on the desk, but it was a bit cramped due to the other items on the table. So, I also ran a specific test for this review, removing the other laptop, leaving more space around here. In this case, things worked better, and I was even able to use both screens simultaneously.
There's no height adjustment, but the screen can be easily tilted up to 15°, requiring only a gentle push or pull. For those who prefer, the screen can also be placed on a VESA-compatible (100x100) articulated stand.
In the box, in addition to the aforementioned stand and base, we also have the power adapter and an HDMI cable. In other words, it comes ready to connect to your PC or laptop and use.
Fabric
O 27-inch UltraFine Display has a screen with IPS LCD technology and 4K resolution (3840 x 2160). This is not an ultrawide or curved monitor, but it has an aspect ratio 16:9, which is perfect for enjoying all types of content and, especially, working on it. It supports HDR and offers a wide range of colors. DCI-P3 90%, excellent for those who work with color, especially in HDR video editing. The screen brightness is 300 nits.
This makes this color monitor sRGB Excellent for image editing too. All these settings can be accessed via a single button at the bottom, allowing you to configure it for a more vivid or cinematic or gamer-like experience, for example.
The IPS panel chosen here is high-quality, but suffers from the same problem that all LCDs face: excessive reflections. In environments with lots of windows, reflections are visible all day long. The solution here would be an anti-reflective coating, but this would make the model more expensive.
As screen options, included in the monitor configuration menu, are as follows:
- Personalized: Allows you to manually adjust all image settings such as brightness, contrast, sharpness and color;
- Vivid: Enhances colors, making them more vibrant and intense;
- HDR Effect: Simulates an HDR (High Dynamic Range) effect, optimizing contrast and colors for content that is not natively in HDR;
- Reader: Reduces blue light emission to provide more comfortable reading and reduce eye strain;
- Cinema: Optimizes image quality for viewing movies and videos;
- FPS (First-Person Shooter): Optimized image mode for first-person shooters, improving visibility in dark scenes;
- RTS (Real-Time Strategy): Image mode designed for real-time strategy games;
- Color Weakness: Assists users who have difficulty distinguishing certain colors, such as red and green.
The screen's refresh rate is 60Hz, which is standard for good work and entertainment use, but it also indicates where this monitor stands in the market. Besides not having a high frame rate, it also doesn't support technologies like AMD FreeSync e Nvidia G-Sync, which are geared towards gamers. Does this prevent you from playing with it? Not at all, but if your sole purpose is to use the monitor for gaming, it might be worth looking at other models.
The main focus here is to provide above-average resolution in a relatively inexpensive model, and this is delivered, even if it means sacrificing other features to do so.
Audio
This was the part that scared me the most when I started testing this monitor. LGAt first, I thought it had built-in speakers, but it doesn't. Its audio control, which can be accessed by the single button at the bottom of the screen, is actually the volume for the headphones that can be connected to the monitor on the back.
The sound quality when using headphones is great, but it also depends on how good your headphones are.
LG Monitor App
O lg ultrafine display does not come with an OS like more advanced models. However, when connecting it to a PC, the app LG Monitor App Installer will be pre-installed on your machine. Through it, you'll have two apps available that can make all the difference in your usage:
- LG Switch: integrates control between your computer and the monitor's own intelligent system, allowing you to organize windows from both systems, create keyboard shortcuts to split the screen, and use a single keyboard and mouse to seamlessly switch control between PC applications and the monitor's native apps, such as Netflix or internet browser;
- LG Dual Controller: is a powerful productivity tool that allows a user to control two different computers (such as a desktop and a laptop) with just one set of keyboard and mouse.
During testing in the LG Switch, we can say that it's very interesting in theory, but not so much in practice. The app is somewhat buggy and invasive, as it splits the screen as it sees fit and whenever it sees fit, even without pressing anything.
In addition to this feature, you can also configure the screen using this app, instead of using the monitor's physical button. Finally, you can also activate a screen sleep mode by clicking the clock icon, a feature that proved slow. It's possible to automate it, but it simply starts while you're moving, becoming a major problem.
In short, it's great to have app integration for the monitor and be able to configure colors and make these adjustments. The rest of the features, however, don't work well and are only cool in theory.
Connectivity
O lg ultrafine display It comes with two HDMI 2 inputs and a Mini DisplayPort input for those who prefer. Additionally, there's a headphone jack for listening to on-screen content directly from the monitor. The monitor relies on essential connections and nothing more, which we don't see as a problem, since it allows you to connect up to three devices simultaneously through its ports.
Price and availability
O LG UltraFine Display Monitor It was launched in April of this year for a suggested price of R$1.859,00. It can now be found at more attractive prices, making it a very solid option for those who need to work with 4K:
- LG UltraFine Display 27US500 Monitor Free Market for BRL 1.299,98
- LG UltraFine Display 27US500 monitor on Amazon for R $ 1.331,65
- LG UltraFine Display 27US500 monitor on Magazine Luiza for BRL 1.299,99
Conclusion
O 27″ UltraFine Display It's an excellent entry-level 4K monitor. For those who need a screen with this resolution for image and video editing, this may be the best option right now. The colors are good, the design works, and the connections are more than enough to get you through a good day's work.
In that category, the LG appears to be the best option, mainly because it brings the 3% DCI-P90 on a “cheap” monitor, making it a super viable option for those who can’t invest as much in top-of-the-line monitors.
It does have some drawbacks, however, due to its lack of height adjustment and its own speakers. However, it already has a good height for its base, and the sound output can be easily resolved with a Bluetooth speaker or headphones. Considering its current price in the Brazilian market, around R$1.300,00, it seems like nothing can beat what LG offers here.
